Hey everyone! Jay Stafford Today we're breaking down Maryland House Bill 136, a new law that protects workers from unfair treatment by their employers. This bill is going to go into effect today, July 1st 2024
Imagine this: you report a safety hazard at work, and suddenly your boss gives you a hard time or fires you altogether. That's what this bill aims to stop, retaliatory actions by the employer.
The law says employers can't punish you for:
• Asking about your rights or your boss's responsibilities.
• Reporting violations of workplace laws.
• Helping out with investigations into those violations.
This is a big deal! Workers have a right to speak up about problems without fearing they'll lose their job.
The bill also protects employers from false accusations. If you make a complaint that turns out to be frivolous, there could be consequences.
Overall, this law creates a fairer playing field. Employees can raise concerns, and employers can't hold it against them. It's a win-win for everyone!
If you have questions about your rights at work, talk to one of our attorneys. They can give you specific guidance about this new law and others that might affect you.
