I really appreciate how as a facial plastic surgeon you are actually promoting body positivity and self acceptance of ones self rather than doing what so many other surgeons do, pick out imperfections to fix. I have been so self conscious about my nose, side profile. after a the cartilage at the tip was damaged during a karate tournament. As I live in the UK the NHS won't repair it as it's considered cosmetic. For me it both, as I can't breath out my right nostril due to a deviated septum, which the ENT consultant did offer to fix, but not my tip. This video has definitely helped me re think my nose. I am what I am. I would love my old nose back but it's not as bad I think it is. Us humans project way too much negativity onto ourselves. Thanks again for a great video. Love your content. Also think you are beautiful 😁

I have a fairly good knowledge base of facial anatomy; however I need to learn more though before I even think about becoming an Aesthetic nurse.

I’m in the Uk and have had two septorhino’s on the nhs. The second was a revision. It’s very possible to do but you have to fight for it. My story is slightly different, I broke my nose as a child and drs refused to operate as I was too young, then I also had to wait for jaw surgery due to an underbite which they won’t operate until at least 21 (as the bones continue to develop into your mid/late 20’s). I was told there’s no point doing the nose until the jaws were done as the jaw surgery would affect the nasal area. But once I had the jaw surgery I pushed at every followup that I needed the rhino because I couldn’t breathe. Sure I wanted an aesthetic difference (but at that point I hadn’t breathed through my nose for years so I didn’t know what I was missing, I just wanted it to look nicer). Then after the first rhino I ‘got greedy’ since the symmetry hadn’t improved significantly (but by then I could breathe perfectly) so I insisted it didn’t look right. Once they operate and create an aesthetic difference they take on responsibility if you become disillusioned/ ‘traumatised’ by the change. They need you to be happy with the results/ have realistic expectations. The reason I mention this is because it’s something they don’t tell you- getting your septum fixed will often change the ‘cosmetic’ appearance of your nose, it could become bigger or narrower etc. So the surgeon will most often have to make slight aesthetic adjustments, and if they’re nice/ like their job/ have some compassion, they will happily make changes that you politely request (within reason) -like I had a slight ‘hump’ shaved down. At the end of the day it’s being done by a surgeon with aesthetic training alongside reconstructive, who does cosmetic procedures often, they’re not going to walk out of a consult without finding out from you personally what the issue is and whether you’re prepared for the possibility of an aesthetic change, where you can insert “this ___ also bothers me, is there anything that can be done?”. I know it sounds manipulative but there’s no other way to get nhs help without being overly dramatic about your symptoms. Tell your gp, dentist, whoever, and insist on a referral. As someone who hated their nose (it was an ugly useless object) and now can breathe with a closed mouth I cannot stress how amazing it is to actually breathe through your nose, it changes your posture, your fitness, the way you talk, the list goes on. Fight for yourself, good luck.

Things like that are only what you notice since you are so used to seing your reflection of your face. Other people are used to seeing your real face and would prefer it. So if you are about to send someone a selfie, you should really send them a picture of your face but flipped to the version you don't like. If you send them the "mirror" face, then they would see the face they are not used to, like you do when you see your "real" face. But in reality, even that difference is not that big merely because of the fact that they are not you. They don't see your face all the time on their phones, in mirrors and in reflections like you do. Your brain compensates for all the imperfections and asymmetries, so when you see an image of your face that is different, those imperfections are hugely exaggerated to you. But for other people, it's not a big deal.

I remember Mariah Carey having major insecurities about this issue, she used to hang her hair over one side of her face. Off topic, but you're really rocking the bald look. My partner suffers from alopecia areata at times of extreme stress, but only in patches on his beard and head. I've seen firsthand how hard it can be to have your appearance alter like that in ways that are out of your control; I just wanted to say that I really admire the way you're handling it with grace and openness.

If you see her straight on while she's speaking it's primarily her smile where you can see the asymmetry however, her smile is charming and she's a pretty woman so I never thought of the asymmetry as a negative. It's simply an objective and individual part of her look. But we all know it only takes one or two unkind comments to plant an insidious seed of doubt in our minds.

I have NEVER, not ONCE, seen someone in a ponytail and been like, _Whoa, that's such a bad look. They really should not have shown their ears to the world today._ Just wanted to share. More than asymmetry I would describe it as "personality". Something that makes you look more friendly or human, or whose facial expressions are easier to relate to. To me Marzia is one of the most beautiful girls I've seen on the internet, whenever she posts pictures on Instagram I'm just starstruck by her beauty as well as her style. I hope she can battle her insecurities - especially because with her, there really is no reason to worry. The lenghts she went to "hide" the asymmetry on her face sounded like she had one eye on her cheekbone and the other on her forehead lol I think her insecurities stem from the inside rather than the outside. I understand what she feels like but I also think she has absolutely no reason to worry lol

I love yt videos like this that address issues that aren't even at the forefront of our minds culturally. For a long time during my teenage years to early 20's I was unhappy with my nose my teeth and the overall asymmetry of my face. I turned 30 this year... and I guess I'm lucky because as time has gone on I have felt more and more secure with my appearance, to the point that i barely even think about it. Strangely enough I think that's largely due to the fact that our Society has become so obsessed by it that it had the opposite effect on me and completely disillusioned me to the obsession with looks. For whatever reason I became way more focused with the internal aspects of myself, as opposed to the external. Maybe I'm just lucky, as a lot of the things we're influenced by choose us... versus us choosing them. But the way that I think of it is in the grand scheme of life, how big of a problem is my nose. Insignificant isn't a big enough word to explain it. Not to delegitimize the people who really struggle with their appearance, because I know that struggle. That struggle is real and can be utterly heartbreaking. But in my estimation, a lot of people out there just need somebody to tell them that they're beautiful, as corny as it sounds, we all really are.

Great video Dr. Gary! I have a pretty asymmetrical face myself (more asymmetrical than most) and I never had an insecurity until getting a consultation from a maxillofacial surgeon. He told me that facial symmetry equated to beauty and that he could give be "better" results with double jaw surgery. It sounded horrific so I didn't go through with it, and now I'm so glad I didn't! More doctors and surgeons should aspire to be like you and seek to give advice that's in the patient's best interest, not instill insecurity in hopes of them scheduling a procedure.

One of my eye sits way higher than the other to the point that several people in my life have pointed it out spontaneously. The symmetrical face trend on tik tok with the reverse filter has made me even more self conscious about it. When I first tried it, I thought there was a distorting effect on the flipped image and when I came to realize it’s just the way my face looks it made me feel so depressed. Since it comes from my bone structure (my eye sockets are misaligned) I don’t think there’s anything I can even do about it surgically. That being said, I’ve noticed Marzia’s asymmetry from day 1 but it never made me think of her as less beautiful. I’m trying to extend myself the same grace though it can be very difficult.

I’ve never really considered any cosmetic procedures (not that I don’t desire more…”perfection”) but watching your channel, hearing how reasonable you are in descriptions combined with turning 44 I’d really like to do some tweaks. The charming qualities I had in youth, asymmetry etc has lost its cuteness, and now I look tired and the imbalance is more pronounced. I try hard to keep any dysmorphia in check…I took selfies way back and realized I developed an obsession with thinking I looked like I had a stroke. So now I don’t really look at myself much and I’m a lot happier. It gets so sad, so fast. When we focus on our faces so much it’s easy to lose the forest for the trees. Pretty much every human face I look at (I’m a nurse) looks perfect and beautiful to me. I truly love humans and find them completely endearing. I prefer imperfect faces to look at, find them more interesting and attractive, but with my own I’ve unfortunately noticed a tendency to become hyper critical of things like proportion and balance. Where is Dr. Gary located? Is he in New York City? I’m sure he’s booked out forever but I would pay to have him tell me what I needed to do. I believe that he works in a subtle manner and I enjoy his demeanor. He seems incredibly calm and he reminds me of my brother. I’m not sure if he’s a Russian Jew or not but he looks so much like him it’s uncanny. Both before and after alopecia.

I honestly NEVER look at a person and think “wow, their face is asymmetrical”. I just don’t notice it whatsoever. So don’t worry about asymmetry! People probably don’t even see it and if they do, they usually won’t even think it necessarily makes you less attractive anyway. If they do, they’re the abnormal ones.

I’m so glad I found this video. I used to stare at myself for long periods of time lifting up one side of my face or wearing my hair to one side to distract from the asymmetry I have. That’s why my picture is sideways because I thought it was too noticeable if I kept it right side up.

Great video cos it really is talking about me lol. I realised that i have rather bad facial asymmetry because i never liked my photos or seeing myself on zoom despite finding myself looking ok in the mirrors. Like the lady you talked about in the video, i find my left weird and i like my right. this is due to my left jaw having a larger gonal angle and my left smaller. The uneven cheekbones are contribute. So i embarked on a journey of learning about facial asymmetry and how i would look like to others. I realised how mirrors flip our images and that is not the true us. I realised that I do have quite bad symmetry. I agree that nobody has perfect symmetry and I also heard about those experiments of putting two exact sides of good looking people and they don't turn out as good looking when there is perfect symmetry. BUT asymmetry has a range, from very mild and undetectable to serious and very obvious. Anyhow long story short I managed to correct most of my asymmetry with suitable filler to my temples and buccal and chin (of cos ageing play a part to worsen my asymmetry due to age). I love the results and have a lot more confidence taking photos and getting on zoom now. And what made me know that I have done the right thing is a lot of friends have commented that I have become prettier and even from strangers as well. Of cos I am not doing this for anyone but for myself. But this journey of self-discovering and self-improvement has been really fulfilling especially arriving at a better place. Thanks for the video, Dr Gary. Always great content. xx

I think we all struggle with insecurity in some way. The media makes it worse and you feel like something must be wrong with you. But the truth is, theres nothing wrong with how you look. The most beautiful quality isnt symmetry- its self confidence. If youre accepting with how you look yourself, your life becomes more considerably beautiful in every way. You can see the jawline assymetry at 6:32, honestly, as someone myself who has a pretty high left to right jawline assymetry I ended up getting some jawline fillers just to help balance it. I personally don't care about it being perfectly symetrical, for me it was how obvious the difference was for me. Some people may think that's dumb of me, but frankly, I feel so much better now when a camera is brought out knowing that my jawline wont look weird from one side to the other. FOr her, in this short video clip alone I don't think she has any reason to be bothered by it, but again as you mentioned, we can build up pretty crazy complexes in our heads and form a level of body dismorphia in our own eyes.
