Thanks for the video, really useful for me, as my Mk3 has two loose pots. I plan to replace all at same time. One hint: those knobs have a CAPACITIVE way to detect you are touching them. So the "silly wire support made with zip ties" is not so silly, but a way to control the stray capacitances which may cause the ground cabling being routed loosely. So, KEEP THE GROUND WIRING AS CLOSE TO THE FACTORY WAY. If not, you could get reduced performance on the touch buttons
@D-One

No prob. Oh, interresting... So the zip ties are to keep the Ground wire close to the PCB as that affects the capacitive touch? Thanks for sharing!! I guess I was surprized with technique used secure the cable, why not some sort of plastic clip thing? Maybe it's a cost saving thing?

@@D-One well, having worked in my previous work on an electronics manufacturing company, I can tell you people in the manufacturing section were pretty imaginative, so they used what was in stock to solve such kinds of things. By the way, did the replacement pots keep working fine over time?. Do they feel similar to the originals?. On my unit, which has seen very little use so far (sat unused for three years), two pots have a very loose feeling. My guess is that the greasy material which generates the resistance, flows into the pot (basically by gravity / capilarity) and so damages the electrical contact and also stops doing its mechanical work
@D-One

@@JoseVGavila Oh, I see.. Makes sense! Yes, new pot lasted for as long as I owned that MK3, sold it like 2 years after this video, it did have a fair bit more assistance then the originals (similar to the ones on the M+) Unlike NI's pots they never got looser over time, that's def related to the brand/model pot they used.

Oh.. I would have loved to have seen a video teardown of it! With water, the trick is allowing it to fully dry before turning it back on, a lot of electronics can survive water if no electricity is running thru it while it's wet.

So I wasn't about to read through all the comments to see if anyone had explained the deal with the main encoder and the way it is designed. I've never touched an MK3 so I didn't know that the main encoder also had X Y switches, but thats how it works. If you've ever seen curved laser cut plywood build projects where they laser cut accordion like cuts mos of the way the through the wood making it possible to create round corners with a material that you typically not able to do that with. It's a similar principal the switches surrounding the encoder move rather than them using a ots product that does this but has more bulk they engineered what looks to probably be the cheapest and uses the least number of moving parts to achieve this type of functionality.
@D-One

Yes, I get recommended laser cutting and woodworking videos a lot due to my interests, I think what you're talking about is called "living hinge"? no 100% sure. I get how it works but I found it very interesting to see in a PCB, can't say I ever saw something similar before or since on a PCB. Kind of cool actually. :)

Yeah Ive never seen a circuit board that operates on that principle before. It's extremely intriguing though. I came across your video because I was trying to figure out if all the Maschines have single PCB's or if any had the all the parts for the pads on an individual board that I would be able to harvest separately from the rest of the hardware that would just end up necessitating a larger footprint for the idea that I have. @@D-One

one of my bank buttons is finicky and i have to press real hard to activate it.. since i see there are physical buttons underneath, im wondering if some deoxit would help the button.. i come from MPCs and deoxit was a life saver with all the switches on those samplers. buttons would act up all the time and a quick spray would get them working fast. MPCs were just a hand full of screws and removing the cover. this disassembly seems excessive..
@D-One
2 жыл бұрын
Hi. It's a more modern and way more compact unit than the older MPC's that's why the disassembly is a bit more complicated but it's still fairly easy IMO; the video is long because I'm talking a lot otherwise it would take 10min. Deoxit sounds like a temporary solution to me that might do long-term harm. The buttons are regular tactile switches, in your shoes, I would hand over the unit to your local electronics repair guy and have him replace it. There's no reason to be any severe oxidation on the switch/PCB unless you spilled some liquid inside or something. If you do go for the deoxit approach open it up to check if there's visible damage, apply a small amount and clean it up. Up to you tho, good luck.

That's a common issue if you search the forum, for some people it seems to go away when using another USB cable, USB port on the computer, and similar simple solutions... Try those first. The pot itself is closed, dirt can't really get in there afaik. If you want to try to replace it, assuming you have basic knowledge of how to use a soldering iron and solder sucker than read the last few posts here: www.native-instruments.com/forum/threads/knob-strength-on-hardware.349895/ I shared a lot of detail there.

My Maschine Mk3 is experiencing issues with one of the encoders, and instead of sending it to NI for repairs, I wanted to replace it myself. I read your responses on the NI forum page (knob Strength) I just wanted to make sure I'm not losing any functionality for when I do swap out the encoders.

My komplete kontrol mk2 has this issue and my maschine mk3. Poor quality control by Native Instruments
@D-One
2 жыл бұрын
All controllers have this issue, excluding the M+ (for now). It's not really a QC problem per-se, since it's an issue that is not detectable immediately, it takes a quite a long time to develop so better factory QC can't stop it. 😢 It might be related to the fact they use rare endless potentiometers instead of regular cheaper encoders. What they should have done is have a HW revision version with another endless-pot brand after all the reports of this issue.
