I think this reveal would have been so much more powerful if the death of Sheppard and the destruction of the original Normandy happened at the end of ME1 rather than 5 minutes before this scene. Would've been simply amazing to start playing the second game after a year or two when it was released and see the new Normandy appear.

***** If Shepard died in ME1 that would of been one of the shitiest endings, almost as bad as the ME3 ending. Who would buy the second game if they're chareacter dies in the first one? And Bioware can't spoiled it by saying don't worry, we'll resurect Shepard.

I think placing Shepard's death at the start of ME2 works because it adds to the uncertainty of the game right off the bat. Like, you've played ME1 and gotten close to all these characters that are near and dear to you, survived a suicide mission, everything went great... then ME2 opens up and you lose all that: your crewmates fly off in escape pods, your ship is destroyed and you lose Shepard. It puts you on the edge - what will happen? Who will I play as now? Then, building up your team again and getting used to this organization that's foreign to you... I think they were right to start ME2 with Shepard's death; it made for more interesting storytelling.

The Alliance frigates are all named after famous battles, e.g. the Battle of Normandy. The Alliance's way of referring to Humanity's history of conflict. The Normandy SV2 isn't an Alliance ship, but naming after the first Normandy just adds that extra bit of 'we're going to kick your ass'. Awesome.

But yeah, without a doubt - this moment in the game came close to matching the reveal of the Enterprise in Star Trek... It was so cool that I couldn't wipe the grin from my face. @GameScenes You're kind of right. Microsoft Game Studios originally published Mass Effect in 2007 but in October of that year, EA acquired publishing rights for Bioware and their brands. Later in 2008, the PC version was released and was published by EA. EA, one of the biggest publishing/development gaming companies in North America, has far more cash to invest. This combined with Mass Effect's great success and popularity, allowed for bigger budgets and bigger studios for future titles.
