I remember the first time I heard that. When Shepard mentioned her name I thought it was familiar(I had just played the second game in prep for the third). And when the subtitle said Charr I fucking lost it. The voice acting in this game is worth a fucking nomination. Over the top and funny at some points, and heartbreakingly deep at others. It really gets you strung out if you play the whole saga in a row.

For as much flak as the 3rd game got I thought it did an incredible job finishing off little side-stories like this from the previos games (albeit in a heart-breaking fashion here)
@darko1295
2 жыл бұрын
I think the 3rd game suffers from some poor decisions concerning its main plot and doesn't build-up some things properly, but overall even those things aren't that bad and it didn't at all deserve the actual condemnation it got, at least back when it came out. I think after Andromeda and Anthem people finally started appreciating it more. The heart of what made this series so great (the characters and their interactions, the lore and those small moments and background conversations that do so much for the worldbuilding) are still there and, arguably, at their best in the trilogy.

Most of the flak that the 3rd game received was due to the lackluster ending, especially how the whole thing with the Kid AI controlling the reappears sounds to BS put together in a hurry without much care about how the ending fits into the greater lore build with the two previous games and lots of books. It is similar to the hyperspace ram in that awful Disney star wars disgusting movie, it shat all over the established lore.

I've said it once, I'll say it again, Mass Effect 3 is a perfect example of how failing to stick the landing can mess anything up. There are so many good moments in this game, so many things that'll stick with you for a long time coming, and even if certain aspects of the game and the story are somewhat lacking (coughWarAssetscough), many more were done really well, curing the Genophage, the Geth-Quarian war, Javic (setting aside him being turned into day one dlc because of EA), and seeing the conclusion of so many character's stories. But the ending means a lot of people will walk away from the game with a bad taste in their mouth, which can sour the experience.

Charr’s story shows two things. Number one. Despite how the galaxy sees them, the Krogan are not just some jarheaded savages with guns. Like everyone else they’re a people and people are different to each other. Charr looks like a Krogan, he sounds like a Krogan but socially he couldn’t be any further to one. Sure he’s a fighter. His natural adaptation to his harsh homeworld has made him durable but c’mon look at him! He’s spending an entire night yelling poetry to an Asari that he’s down bad for. Hell the Asari in question even says that he’s charming and sweet and loving. He sounds like a lovable goofball. Which yeah most Krogan are it’s why we like them so much but Charr is just a cinnamon roll under a rock. He’s corny and head over heels for Ereba. He doesn’t even care that his child would be an Asari because he just wants to be a dad. He seems like a genuinely good guy. Someone who is in complete opposition to the stigma around the Krogan. The second thing that Charr’s story shows us is that Mass Effect 3 just sucks… emotionally! Like you really get the vibe that this is hopeless with every citadel mission you do and every interaction you listen to. There are families being separated, the hospital and docks are overflowing with the wounded, dying and frightened fleeing the horrors the Reapers are inflicting on their homes. There’s this old lady in the embassy floor who is constantly mistaking an Asari for her daughter in law asking non stop about a son she’ll never see again… then there’s this. This mission and the second game as a whole was fresh in my mind since the day I completed it was the day I started playing ME3. I walked down and instantly recognised my friend Ereba the moment she mentioned that her husband was a Krogan and fighting the war alongside the Turians… a species that condemned his to the worst fate possible. He should hate this people and still he fights alongside and for them. Risking his life for theirs, his wife’s and his daughter’s. Then I was leading my squad into the Rachni nest to find the corpse of a Krogan… scavenged his body hoping to find some credits or an upgrade and found that voice line… I wish I never did that honestly. When I went to tell Ereba the news I stopped and listened to her talking down her customer for her insensitivity. Talking about how her husband is risking his life right now… then I apologised, said that she needed to hear this and let Charr recite one last poem to her. I don’t know why I let Ereba’s copy paste interaction with a customer conclude before I did that… but I know that non of that made me happy, I wasn’t fulfilled doing that I just felt… empty. Mass Effect 3 is an emotionally draining experience with some high points. Fighting a reaper in the torn down ruins of Tucchanka might go down as the coolest part of a game I’ve seen… but it’s met with one of the most heart wrenching scenes in a game. Mass Effect has these fleeting moments of satisfaction and fun and just general awesomeness before slapping you with the reality of the situation and honestly… I love it for that. So rest in peace Charr… you never got to see your home get rebuilt but I made sure you didn’t die in fein. Man I’m sappy as hell…
