In the Sistine Chapel, Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Mass, during which he administered Baptism to 20 newborn babies, children of Vatican employees, as per custom.
Concelebrating, helping with the complementary rites of Baptism, were Archbishops Giuseppe Sciacca and Guido Pozzo.
The Chapel's original altar was used, so that after the offertory the Pope oriented himself "ad Orientem", that is, facing the altar and with his back to the assembly, even though the back of the Chapel faces west (it follows the same geographical layout as St. Peter's Basilica, which, like a typical roman basilica, has the main altar away from the back, so that the celebrant is facing the door, which is towards the sunrise).
