Like most audiophiles in the 1980's I tried kiln dried silver sand in my Loudspeaker stands but it made the sound unbalanced with the bass very springy / bouncy. I hated it, so I swapped the sand for a 2kg bag of 9 bore lead shot in each stand and wow ! the detail popped out and the bass really Kicked you in the stomach it sounded fantastic! Forget the sand red herring and try lead shot.

I’ve not tried this, however I have used sand in speaker stands augmented with acrylic casting resin. This works very well indeed. There are other methods to dampen or deaden cabinet resonance. I’ve used the same deadening sheets used in car audio applied in the speaker cabinet with great success. These things all work. The focus of this loading is on the base of the speaker as opposed to the dampening sheet sections which address the dampening on all interior wall surfaces. There are many ways to address problems inside the speaker. I’m not kicking your sand dampening thing. It works well in speaker stands. It can work in speakers as well. The sand must be drier than the desert. Put the sand in an oven to extract the moisture completely out of the sand for obvious reasons. Use only filtered, dry sand to do this.

If you really want to measure the vibration at zero cost, you can make yourself an interferometer with a laser pointer and the insides of a cd rom (anti vibration pads and half mirrors). Then you glue a mirrornto the speaker and use it to create an interference pattern and record it to measure the movement later 👍

It is an interesting topic but not always straightforward. I mass loaded a pair of Target stands many years ago with Lead bites. I lived with these for years. I then had a home demo of a new pair of stand mounts. The dealer kept scratching his head as he couldn’t get the speakers to sing or sound right. He said “please tip this stuff out of the stands”. I did and Wow! They came to life I left a little in there to stop the ringing but my word I learned a lesson. I’ve performed this on a few other systems with very similar results. Over loaded stands can somehow drain the speaker of dynamics. Give it a try and see what I mean. You can always put it back. Cheers

I can’t tell if you are serious or joking. If you did add sand into your ported speaker, what you did was decrease the internal volume of the speaker. IINM, sand filling has been around since the days of Gilbert Briggs’ Wharfedale designs of the “golden age” - circa mid ‘50s. I’ve personally used glass “sand” blasting media and or shot bead in both the hollow legs of equipment and speaker stands as well as void areas of back-loaded horn and other floorstanding speaker enclosures. It certainly works, but on larger enclosures you need a fridge dolly and a couple of weigh lifters to move the speakers, and they can be an absolute nightmare to try to empty.
