What I've described here does not match how I've seen this headphone measure on oratory1990's GRAS system. This review unit was directly from Drop, with serial 0000, and I cannot confirm that it is representative of final production units out in the wild. Until I get another unit with a production-level serial, everybody should be skeptical about my description of sound here compared to what's being sold today. This review is absolutely accurate to what I heard, but only from this review unit, just to be clear.

I just got these headphones. I can only think You have a bad production unit. I run them without an equalizer. They sound pretty sweet actually. I am used to a Sennheiser 650 with a Bottlehead crack, and 800S with Bottlehead Mainline. They are less detailed than the HD800s, not shocking, but very enjoyable. Soundstage a bit narrower. I also dont hear the music as if it comes from above/center. Would recommend them.

Could the soundstage thing be because you're hearing the shape of the cups (more space for sound towards the top of the earcup than below)? Also from your description, sounds like it has the diffuse feeling of the K702 but without the actual soundstage width. From your Elex and Edition XX reviews, sounds like the HD600s and K701s are still pulling their weight (though I prefer the K702 for the very slight but noticeable tighter imaging over the K701).
@nonenothing4412

what is diffuse feeling
@Chase-yg5no
5 жыл бұрын
@@nonenothing4412 It can mean either very wide, or very unfocused. In some cases, it's the intended sound, as diffuse field eq is a thing. Most headphones with the diffuse field peaks have very big soundstage (DT880, HD800, K701/2). Other times, it's used to describe a lack of focus, or a blurry "image" of sound. This is caused more by design limitations. It can make the music sound "spacious" but lack a sense of directionality. I think Lachlan used the term to describe the AD900x.

7:00 That's how STAX sound like, the main sounds are way above compared to most dynamic headphones and is not fixed by moving the drivers below the ears... Only the vocals are where it should be. STAX is a very wide and very tall wall of sound and almost no depth/below sound. Same thing noticed by Joshua Valour on HE1000s compared to stax l300 limited, but I don't know how hifimans sound like. I own L700s so I know in the first seconds that it sounds wrong, but yeah, it separates sounds in a different manner.

There was a open box pair for 430 or so on hifiman's website, but I went with the Sundaras instead. The massdrop headphone band does look more durable than the Sundara's band though. I remember really liking the sound of the 400is, for the short amount of time I used them. REPOST from Massdrop discussion: "Regarding Metal 579. He's dead wrong on the "grainy treble". It is not as extended as Ananda with the extreme air, BUT, that was NOT the design criteria. The design criteria was to offer something different from....rather than less-than. XX has better low end extension. It's a more relaxing listen than Ananda. XX is not just some old HiFiMan parts thrown together with an older designed magnet structure, etc......."which is why they're cheaper". NO! Massdrop made some decisions and sought a particular sound signature for a particular audiophile taste they deemed underserved by the current HiFiMan lineup. The headband was carefully chosen, not to save on cost. NO! That was an assumption. The older style was deliberately chosen for function, durability, trouble-free operation, and believe it or not--style. Massdrop could have collarborated with HiFiMan on a Susvara derivation with a gold-plated headband if they wanted to. This narrative by Metal574 and others that XX is some sort of hobbled Ananda or Edition X v2....that was "built to a particular lower price point with lower cababilities--and that's why it costs less--is bullshit. That is NOT giving the Massdrop team enough credit AND it's not the truth. XX is it's own animal. It has its own unique sound signature for a different audiophile or an under served sound signature niche. I know it's natural to compare, compare, compare, but sometimes a reviewer needs to just see the product as a stand alone for it's own unique merits. I'm telling everyone that will read this post, XX has a very smooth treble and relaxed signature. That is what it was designed to have. The lower price point has nothing to do with the quality of the sound--It was not meant to be an apology for something that was lacking. The price point was to give the mid-fi'ers the opportunity to taste the high-end without going all in with $1000-1600. Massdrop has succeeded wildly on that note. I'm sure Massdrop could have chosen to make an Ananda version in midnight blue like they did with HD6XX and sold it for $600 too. But Massdrop did not do that. They created something unique just like the Elex. UNIQUE--NOT LESS THAN. Peace out.

HiFiMAN Arya might turn out to be a good deal if it's really using the HE-1000's driver. It's basically a Matt black version with a $1600 price tag. So I hope someone sends you a pair lol

Compared to using the 4XX with their stock pads, Brainwavz XL Velour pads vastly expands the sound-stage. I'm confident that no open-back, around-ear headphone beats them under $200. One can then add sub-bass to taste. No need to buy the Edition XX, which cost $400 more then the 4XX + Brainwavz combo. That money would be much better used towards a good DAC/amp.

@@metal571 there are only 3 videos in the wild reviewing these....I really have no choice in this case. It's only you and another guy that has posted videos. But good to know for the future. Burn in is real, but maybe 5 or 10 minutes just to allow things to go through it's natural motion. I feel like the recommended countless hours of burn-in are only for your ears to adjust. I was only asking because I've been waiting since November to get my hands on these. And your video hurt my feelings...and I was only looking for some kind of bright side somewhere...but your comment is good to know for the future, Tough Guy.

That would be better termed as "break in", which is a much more reasonable idea, but still hasn't been proven to always improve the sound quality under all circumstances, which is what Head-Fi would lead you to believe. I get this comment of "oh the review is wrong because you didn't burn it in" just about every day, which is a load of complete bs. My review stands.

Thanks for telling it like it is Metal!!! This goes to show, there is no such thing as a free lunch. You are just not going to get what used to be a $1,299 HEX V2 headphone for $599 unless you get it used and now you will not be able to get a used one near that price either.

@@metal571 So I've heard. If I wanted to spend less though would a K712 or just an HD 700 do the trick? I know neither really measure well but for gaming that doesn't really matter. I've had many tell me that the HD 660 S isn't a good gaming headphone in comparison to the HD 700 or K712. I know the HD 800 is out of all of their leagues for gaming.

HD 700 is garbage, don't buy it at any price. Enormously incorrect FR on that thing. The 712 would be okay for gaming but I think the DT880 has better more precise imaging than any of those AKGs
