I was pondering these the other day while reading about the history of Koss. A hump around 1.5k makes me nervous, but I do love the L700. As far as the "Ethereal" sound of e-stats go, my armchair engineering guess is that E-stats break up very differently at high frequencies than a typical driver (or maybe they break up well above audio frequencies), so they sound smoother and you don't end up with unpleasant harmonics from hysteresis. That's just a guess though. My other guess is they just have way more energy above 12khz than typical. Keen to hear your impressions of the L700!

Yeah the 1.5k peak on these is not as bad as the L700 so if it doesn't bug you on L700 it won't bug you here either. This isn't on the same detail level at all tho

Bought these almost a couple years ago now thanks to this review. Got an amazing deal on them as I'm in the UK and massdrop were closing their eu warehouse at the time. Got them for around £200 with a lifetime warranty. I have had to use that warranty twice - the first time the right ear picked up a constant whine, the second time the energizer failed. Shipping them to the US for repair wasn't as difficult as I might have expected. I love them, they sound incredible and I currently use them as my daily headphone. Thanks metal for this review, I don't think I could have found a better headphone for the price. I wonder where I go up from here, HD800? Hope you're well, Metal.

I picked these up on the first drop. I agree with a lot of your evaluation. It's a keeper for me. I do EQ them with lower freq boost, below 200 hz. They are boosted quite a lot 60hz on down, boosted a moderate amount from 60 to about 180 hz. I left most of the remaining Freqs, above 200 hz, alone as I have not been able to find EQing in midrange and upper ranges to be of benefit, as it's probably close to perfect for these electrostatics. By boosting below 200 hz the over all sound is fantastic. The boosted bass, is clean, not distorted or exaggerated, and have found a musical delight for my preferences. FYI, I am not a bass head; prefer balance as notes without the lower octaves is not a complete note. I really enjoy these. One important feature that was not mentioned in your eval was the Koss "limited" lifetime warranty on this unit. That is amazing. For instance, I have a pair of Stax entry level electrostatics, SR Gamma purchased back in the mid 1980s, new. They had a similar plastic build. The energizer was also entry level with same type of build. Anyway, I did enjoy their electrostatic sound very much. After several years of use, the drivers started to crackle, especially in the lower octaves. I checked with Stax for repair, and they were out of warranty. The repair was a couple hundred dollars at the time. I think the headphones cost 400 to 500 back in the mid 80s. My understanding from reports from 950 owners is the Koss warranty on this headphone is basically no questions asked warranty, a few dollars out of pocket for shipping With the warranty, these should last a lifetime. The warranty is a tremendous value when you consider electrostatics often do go bad over time.

You made a great point about sine sweeps vs music. I'd imagine that an FR is almost more accurately a "frequency response potential" because when drivers are forced to do multiple tones, different Freqs can suffer. I wonder if its possible to measure a sweep playing two tones. Like, how different is the 30hz tone WHILE a 2khz is also playing, you know?
@metal571

@@metal571 DMS3 did a video recently where he separated bass, mids, and treble on a track. I imagine if you recorded the frequencies of a headphone from those separated playbacks, then piece them together to create a FR, THEN compared it to the headphone's FR just playing the track normally, you could see where frequencies differ and where "grain" could come up. It'd have to be a realtime comparison like they do with framerates comparing GPUs.

I'm beyond late to the party, but checking out the various reviews for these, yours seems by far the most negative to me: the only reason I would get a clunky estat that needs a special amp that won't work with anything else is if it offers me something special that nothing else offers at the price. And that would be detail/resolution. But you only compared its detail to a "measly dynamic" like the 660S, not even to a planar. If I had only that to go on I would steer wahahay clear of these. :)

I have read numerous posts where owners stated that their Koss phones needed around 100-125 hours of use to "break in" and sound their fullest. Do you know how many hours your sample had prior to your evaluation? Maybe there is a bit more bass to be had?
@metal571
5 жыл бұрын
Can't tell if this is a serious comment. Burn in is a huge myth that's never been proven to exist in such a manner that headphones always improve with age.
@jamespeck2638
5 жыл бұрын
@@metal571 I will try to explain. I have read it numerous times on forums by Koss ESP 950 owners who speak of their experiences with this headphone over the past 20 years. They stated the 125 hour break in (or a bit more) being beneficial for the bass. A vibrating electrostatic diaphragm is a completely different beast than a dynamic speaker used in most headphones. I personally have experienced break in with different sets of Magneplanar panel loudspeakers resulting in stronger mid bass and bass due to the Mylar diaphragms loosening up (stretching a tiny bit) over time. I think electrostatics are constructed in basically the same principle...a stretched polyester diaphragm only connected on the periphery. I read that each Koss panel was near 12 square inches. I could imagine that much area could be a factor why some users would experience a change in bass sound after some use. Wouldn't take much loosening up to make a difference in the resonance of the diaphragm. Everything under tension stretches (a bit) over time (guitar strings, drum heads). Drum heads are constructed of Mylar polyester film and they do indeed stretch over time which necessitates tuning them every so often. They are also are a LOT thicker and heavier than the very thin fragile film used in the electrostatic headphones. If those drum heads stretch, resulting in lower resonance necessitating tuning (tightening), and Magneplanar panels stretch, also resulting in lower panel resonance with greater apparent bass, then why not the more delicate electrostatic headphone diaphragm? Now I am not talking night and day differences here, but one where bass performance that was less than adequate, after break in, is now much more pleasing and satisfying. Stick "em in a corner with a pillow or blanket over them and run them hard. This way you don't have to wait 125 or more hours of "normal listening" for results. How many hours it takes depends on the frequencies (more bass is better) and amplitudes (louder is better) it is subjected to. Within reason. NEVER use sine waves for break in. Here is what Tyll Herstens at Innerfidelity has to say about the subject...www.innerfidelity.com/content/evidence-headphone-break Seriously, I would think THESE headphones would improve with age.
@metal571
5 жыл бұрын
Where's the proof? Tyll wrote clearly in the conclusion to that article that this isn't evidence for break in. I've read everything Tyll has ever written already. Someone should measure a new and an old esp950 then

To George Lim, below here: I would imagine these would be ideal for classical, given they're so detailed and balanced-sounding, or STAX would be even better, if you can swing those. I found this link to some recommendations for classical, they seem to like the Beyerdynamics or Sennheiser open-backs etc. That would seem to make sense to me. You might also consider some good planar magnetic cans, I have the Hifiman HE400Is, and they are phenomenal no matter what you play through them, really. And they don't require the most powerful amp to drive them, although I find they shine best with a reasonably muscular headphone (or desktop) amp, like the Fiio A5 Mont Blanc which easily drives those with plenty of power to spare. Beyerdynamics I'm told are more "high-end/brighter" type phones, so you might prefer those. Although, the high end on the planars is absolutely crystal-clear! I would go to a good audio store and try to debut a few before you buy with a good audio player with your fave classical reference recording or whatever. I meant to say, I also hear great things about Grado headphones for classical and jazz, they are not so bass-heavy and those might be a good choice too. Again, try to audition some first if you can. I've also heard the better Fostex headphones, such as the Mark III RP50 planar magnetic studio phones, are phenomenal as well, given they are not bass-heavy cans, but they are not at all efficient and require a powerful amplifier to really drive them. Also, AKG Pro Reference 701 or 702s might be a good choice for classical, as well. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pmqNuJmmk4WQeWU

I have a feeling the Beyerdynamics might be the finest of this group for classical. Everything I've heard about them suggests they're best for detail, soundstage, and mids and highs, not bass monsters whatsoever, and your choice of open or closed. metal571 I have a Grado Sr125 That I bought about 12 or 13 years ago. I didn’t like that it was bass light and harsh with many recordings.It is still in my headphone cabinet now. But doesn’t get any eartime anymore I bought a Sennheiser HD 600 and 650 and a couple of generations of Momentum headphones and liked those a lot.I thought they sounded a little veiled, especially the 650, so I EQd the mid bass hump down a little bit. The original Momentum is not veiled, but the newer one is... I picked up the Hifiman HE 400S And was amazed at how much clearer they are compared to the Sennheisers, but the bass had no impact at all. And contrary to what they say, they are not really efficient enough to be run on portable devices, some sort of amplification is needed Then I got a Grado SR 325e. A huge improvement over my original 125. The bass has impact. They are clear and detailed. But still a tad harsh with some recordings. The RS2e adds just a pinch of warmth and smoothness and refinement to the Grado sound.So you have the smoothness that you would get with the 600 or 650, but you get more clarity because there is no veil. But I agree most Grado headphones are not good, and their build quality is something that should be brought into the 21st-century. We all like different things. My experience with the Hifiman products is that their build quality and reliability are terrible considering how much you pay And by the way, what you say about the KSC75,We agree on that, they are amazing. I got rid of the clips and bought the parts express headband for better comfort and the earcups are tighter against my ears so I get the more full sound

I have the orignal ESP 950 and have used it with a Stax SRM-1/MK-2. Makes a big difference, especially with the bottom end. You get more bass without resorting to EQ. More depth of soundstage as well.

I didn't like the sheer weight of the Audeze I heard at Apple Store last year. $800 and wayyy too heavy on my head. They felt like I was wearing a bloody bowling ball on my head. Sound was good but a bit dark. These I think were made plasticy to reduce weight for extended listening, but they're not really made for sheer comfort, even so. They tried to engineer them like old-school studio monitors (like old old school at Abbey Road or whatever) and keep the profile light as possible. I also don't love the idea of it being exclusively tied to this energizer thingie--I'd rather run them through the best headphone or desktop amp I can afford to run them through.

The upcoming Kaldas Research RR 1 will have detachable cables. It's an electrostat I'm REALLY interested interested in as it's price point is $500, yet it's inspiration seems to be the STAX SR-007 Mark 2... and apparently it has more bass and warmer sound than the 007 Mark 2. The SR-404 Limited is my favorite STAX to date which I prefer over the L300, L300 Limited, 007 Mk2, and 009....and absolutely makes the Argon Mk3 seem lacking in bass both in quantity and detail. The Kaldas Research RR 1 should be above the SR-404 Limited in ability... that is my hope at least. www.head-fi.org/threads/kaldas-research-rr-1-conquest-500-electrostatic.900147/ I had Koss ESP/950 as my first E-stat... was good and I really liked it - until I got in a STAX L300. Simply two very different headphones, with the STAX being much more my preference - had no desire to listen to the Koss after listening to the STAX . Bass was always weak on the Koss ESP/950, used Loki 20Hz knob at 3+ o'clock to get it good/natural enough. Better SS driver units will help with getting a warmer, fuller sound and more punch - but the Koss ESP950 will always be behind any STAX when it comes to the low end impact, extension being rolled off at both ends, and clarity/detail. Difference between ESP950 and a STAX SR-L300 Limited with L700 upgrade mods (main E-stat I use) is much like the difference between an HD6XX with less bass impact and a Focal Clear with more low end and a smoother treble...two very different things.

You know that Koss personally approved the release of this model, right? It is exactly the same headphone with a different color scheme and new velour pads. The only other things cut are the original Koss bag and the battery in the energizer.
