Massive vintage Caterpillar CAT Diesel Engine Start up. The engine being so big it requires a second side mounted smaller engine to turn it over to fire up
A true pro starting that wee pup motor and letting it run for a good while to warm up the big motor and she fired right up, proper procedure was applied and worked well, no either and other nonsense necessary, nice video on how to operate older equipment as they were designed, thanks

Proper procedure on my 1936 D13000 power unit is to hand crank the pony motor, let it run for 5 minutes, engage the diesel until it shows 40 psi of oil pressure, then run on compression for a few minutes before opening the fuel. It purrs like a cat. 87 years old, and still in purrfect shape.

The drive sprocket design on the old cats is much better than the new ones. The old drive sprocket had the chain wrapped 3/4 of the way around it allowinh for longer life of the sprocket. The new ones have the chain only 1/6 of the way wrapped around the drive sprocket. So, as soon as there's a little wear on the sprocket of the new CATs, you must replace the sprocket.

Not hardly. Having more than three teeth engaging was excessive wear. The force on the chain was found to be 70% on the first tooth of the sprocket, 20% on the second and 10% on the third. Anything more teeth engaging is not needed and only contributes to extra wear on the teeth and potential packing issues.

Hi, Jon Will. Donchya wish ya KNEW wotchya were prattling on about instead of just spraying words everywhere? Hwoods01 has given you one reason for the sprocket location change. There were a couple of other reasons too: 1. It got the contact between sprocket teeth and track pin bushes up out of the dirt, thus lessening wear. 2. It allowed for much easier modular component final drive removal. Do yer research and be sure brain is switched before putting typing fingers to work. Just my 0.02. You hava wunndafull dae. Best wishuz. Deas Plant.

The tracks appear over tensioned because he has the dozer chained to the trailer by the tracks. The chains pulling of the tracks draw out any slack they have.

Not really, with the pony running, you can warm up the coolant for the diesel. Using compression release for the diesel then you can establish diesel lube oil flow. Then disengaging compression release, you can really get the diesel up to temp. All making for reduced starting mechanical stresses. Worth a few minutes, no?
