After fighting fires for 35 years in Chicago I can honestly say that I have never seen a surround and drown fire attack as aggressive as this one! My hats off to the fire crews from Miami Fire Rescue that fought this fire. Trust me, it could have been much, much worse. The application of Class A firefighting foam was key to the success of this intervention. Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (retired) Chicago FD

I was the person who was interviewed here on TV. I am absolutely thankful how much coverage this is getting. I am absolutely grateful that the City of Miami, American Red Cross, and everyone involved here are doing everything they can to help us in these trying times. Grateful to see how much support we have received up to now.

Take a look at the firefighting foam spilling from the balcony. This is how a great fire department stops fires before they spread to adjacent buildings. I salute the Firefighters of Miami Fire and Rescue for their efforts to stop this fire with foam. Had they used plain, untreated water the fire could have caused the building to collapse which hampers evacuations and rescues of trapped occupants. Also, the foam used to put this fire out is enviromentally safe Class A structural firefighting foam and NOT Class B aircraft firefighting foam which contains PFAS which has been linked to cancer in humans and animals. Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (retired) Chicago FD

No. What amazes me about the foam is that it is toxic. And in other states the companies that produce the foam are being sued. And right to the bitter end they will continue to sell it. If you live down there, don't go in the adjacent river or fish from it for a while.
@jerryhughes5380

@@jeffreywitczak9840 So you don’t know the difference between Class A (environmentally safe) and Class B (toxic) foam then. Fires are chemistry and physics. We use different extinguishing agents to fight different kinds of fires. Class B foam is used to fight Aircraft fires and has been found to contain what’s known as PFAS - a forever chemical that has been linked to cancer in humans and animals. Class A foam - the foam that Miami Fire Rescue used to suppress this fire is structural firefighting foam and is not intended to fight Aircraft fires that use volatile jet fuel. The foam used at this fire is similar to dish soap. If you think dish soap gives you cancer you might as well stop using shampoo, and bar soap as well as laundry detergent.

If that building was built before 1930, then most likely constructed using Dade County Pine also known as Slash Pine. I've seen a few of those apartment buildings go up in S. Florida. Once it gets burning, it is very hard to put out which is why it was banned.
@RobTeeJr

The Temple Apartment buildings were built in 1920. Dade County Pine was not banned for home construction. Why it isn't used any longer is because it was over harvested and nearly extinct. It grows only in South Florida, with a range extending throughout the southern peninsula of Florida. Dade County pine has been protected from commercial logging for decades. The lumber to be found is through he reclamation process I.e demolition of old homes and buildings.
