I’m from Cairo. Born in 1957. We used to live down the street from that Bell gravestone place. Ate at the Mack’s restaurant and watched movies at the Gem theater. My family moved to suburbs of Chicago in 1966 for my Dads job. The point was a fun picnic place. Beautiful rivers. Haven’t been there since about 1978. Very sad how the town is mostly empty. I still want to go see it again someday. Thanks for the awesome video. I enjoyed it very much.

Video hits close to home because I’ve seen a lot of these locations. Chester comes up because my GPS took me a weird way out of St. Louis on the way home from my Grandma’s funeral a couple years ago. Ended up cutting through Chester and found it super cool, though I didn’t stop long. Meanwhile Cairo is about 30 minutes from where I live, and it’s sad to see how run down it is. There’s a big new area of houses and such that I think is an attempt to revitalize the area but not sure how well it’s working. Cool to think depending on where he travelled next, he might’ve passed right by my house at some point.

Back in 2007 or 2008 I was working in the area for a short time and visited Cairo. It was really weird being there. The city couldn't afford to maintain traffic lights, so they were replaced with stop signs. The sign posts weren't even put in the ground, but attached to old wheels/rims and weighted with sandbags. The cop cars were lettered with cheap mailbox letters.
