It's like if Canada invaded the USA. Then Mexico arrives and beats Canada back, then takes charge of your whole country and oppresses you for two generations. They deport dozens of thousands of people to Mexican deserts, drench any idea of a free local government for the USA, and populate a third of the ex-USA with Mexicans. Americans live under a reign of silent terror, and don't make too much noise, lest their own kids report them. And the Mexicans build a giant memorial to mexican heroism, just to make sure everybody knows who's boss. Fourty years later, the Mexican regime collapses, the USA become free again, and when the Americans topple the Mexican memorial, somebody in Europe tell them it's just wrong, that Mexicans died for that country.

With that being said, the Soviets lost the most people out of any nation in WW2 . We can argue about how which side was this or that or if the world after was for the better or worse. But that's irrelevant, the world we live in was made possible by the millions of Soviets who gave their all for their motherland.
