Where I live we have constant mail spam from fake traders with leaflets linking to review sites full of fake reviews by their friends and family, you can't trust reivew sites, This is a widely know issue that has been around for years especialy in the building trade, And the review sites do nothing about them when you report it, all they care about is ad money and this includes a lot of the largest review sites on the internet.

Thanks for this. I am really confused about your statement that a solar system has to "push out a higher voltage". Unless I am missing something this would cause all sorts of problems. An inverter uses a link inductor (somewhat complex to explain) which controls which way the current should be flowing. Thoughts? Thanks again.

You're a saint for doing this for this gent. Honestly, it boils my blood to see things like this. I'm a self employed computer systems integrator (posh for "I build custom computers") and the stories I've heard make me so sad. I was called by a retirement home just last week where a resident had some work done. While they were in the residence, they were able to get a few more jobs. They butchered peoples computers leaving them worse off than before they started. I went in and fixed them all up, back to where they were. I carried out physical maintenance on their computers and made sure they could be as good as they could be. I didn't charge them for labour. People that take advantage of anyone are nothing but scum. I just wish the police and court system would take action on these clear cases of miss-selling and misleading advice. It's nothing but a scam.

Another scam which has been going on for years is the extended warranty. I used to be in the same line of work as you. An example: A potential customer, who is now a friend, asked for a quote for the computer he wanted. So I gave it, and detailed my customer care terms. He then went to a big high street retailer and paid £400 more for a much less capable (entry level) system, and then bought the 3 year extended warranty, That computer was nothing but trouble, and he wasn't happy when I told him that I couldn't open the box to try to fix hardware issues without voiding his warranty. So he went to the shop, after a month or two and paid the labour costs for fitting a new hard drive and installing the operating system. Only the hard drive was covered by that warranty, according to the shop. They failed to tell him that the drive had a 12 month warranty, which meant there was no cost to the shop. He scrapped the computer about 2 years and bought another computer, again from a retailer. So that warranty wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. At about the same time, another customer bought a computer from me, for the lower price. They owned that computer for at least 5 years, and I was called out twice in that time, to fix software issues. At some point, they had more memory fitted, for an inflated price, by another technician, who remarked about the high quality of the construction, and in particular the almost bomb proof cooling system. (That pleased me.) Indeed, if the cooling fan had failed, the heatsink and case ventilation would have enabled the computer to run at full power without overheating. How much did that extra cooling cost the customer when they bought the computer? About £25. How much did my 2 call-outs cost them? About 25% of the high street shop's 3 year extended warranty. Furthermore, when they sold the computer, it still made a very useful entry level computer for someone's secondary school child; perfectly adequate for their school work.

I had the same experience as your elderly client. He had hardly got through the front door before he started on about the input voltage to the inverter. Nothing else on the checklist promised in their initial approach seemed to interest him and almost as soon as he had looked at the inverter display he said he would have to "fail" the installation. He then tried to pressure me to buy a voltage regulator that just happened to have come available For my part, I kept plugging away at the other checks on the system that had been promised which seemed to annoy him as "failure" rendered those superfluous. I informed him it wasn't my way to fork out big money without further enquiries. So, our conversation went rapidly downhill ending with him ripping up his results sheet from his clipboard and storming out. His throwaway line was to forget that he had ever been. I guess it was his obvious preoccupation with just this one inverter voltage thing that had set alarm bells ringing.

The cold calls relating to solar are a right pain luckily my current phone lets me blacklist numbers. I tried complaining to Ofcom gave them the phone number and name of the company but got nowhere. I have only had an over voltage on 1 day in the 12 years I have had my solar. When the over voltage occured both my solar inverter and battery inverter disconnected to protect themselves. IIRC the cutoff was at 254v I suspect the over voltage was due to high levels of solar on the grid as when the sun started to go down the voltage dropped and both systems reconnected. It was a bit worrying at the time but it's never happened since. My battery inverter provides a graph of the AC input voltage it tends to fluctuate between 240 - 248v.

If less volts, then more amps, and until you combine the 2 into watts over time, you won't know your cost. Don't know enough to put a bet on it, but as the saying goes, I bet your devices would cost you the same. (Simpler. Devices don't change the watts they need because voltage is different.)

We had a genuine over voltage at our property. Called the DNO, and they said it’s considered an emergency due to danger and someone was there in 15 minutes. If there is overvoltage, undervoltage and frequency outside 50Hz, the inverter switches off and a red light appears. This is mandatory in all European countries that are connected to the common continental electricity grid. But England is separate. The connection between England and the continent is established via a high-voltage DC line. That's why the English electricity grid is separate.

It’s probably a grid voltage error. The unit will shutdown when the grid sends irregular voltage to prevent damage to the inverter. There will be a solaredge 3G/4G/WiFi dongle option to log in and check the error. Solaredge can reset / have the owner take over the account if the installer is unable to remove their account. It has happened before, so they can see the serial numbers and existing account install and account permissions. Most decent installers will give you admin or at least supervisor access so you get the error reports and fault notifications to your email or SE account. You don’t really need the admin, but per-panel visualisation requires a higher level access.

Really common scam around here is people doing "electrical inpections" and then trying to sell some costly rewire or fuse box replacement etc. Technically the salesmans reports are mostly correct (though they might be written by incompetent/unexperienced or sales-motivated people), but basicly anything that is not up to the latest electrical code is often recommended to be fixed by the company for some ludacrous price. Most common example is an older type of fuse box (works as a fuse the same way as modern ones, but if the fuse blows you need to replace the fuse). If they cannot find anything else, they'll try to sell you light bulb or light fixture replacements. The funny thing is, that when they call you and ask if you have these white round fuses (the older type), and you mention their actual name, they tend to end their sales pitch there. Otherwise they'll try to offer you a free inspection (which is followed by a strongly worded report and an overpriced quote for unnecessary service).

So, not counting the attempted scammers, do I understand that that Solar System was NOT installed properly in the first place ! (With respect to the monitoring setup). Surely, as part of the original installation, whether that was 10 years ago when those Solar panels first installed, or later (if the Solar Edge inverter was a later upgrade) , before the installers left the premises, part of their checks should have been that the monitoring system was connected up and configured to be working properly. If I was the homeowner back then, before I let the bastards leave, , I'd have asked them to show me, how I could monitor the solar output on my Smartphone App or Laptop.

Another generation being duped by solar. Who can forget twenty to thirty years ago all the hype about solar panels only to find companies going burst after installation and government withdrawing their incentive about adding excess voltage to the grid. Those of us with a little knowledge of electricity and electronics wonder about just how much this industry has evolved over that time, the efficiency of the panels and the spectrum captured during dull days? For myself it's their duration before they need replacing, and then the costs involved as the owners might possibly be at their retiring age, these panels are more exotic in their chemicals compositions, and pose a danger if they leak. You don't get something for nothing, and that includes energy, this investment through time will come back and bite you in the ass, just like an electric car will when the battery needs replacing, at the cost of a new car almost, honestly all this hype about saving the world will impoverish those people who think they are on some energy utopia with free energy from the Sun, or wind, yes that is free, but the machinery required to capture it, and those who install and maintain it, are not, as we have constantly seen.

Also the claimed watt installs are theoretical and not real. both of my next door neighbors are making 50% of what they were claimed to make and have seen NO savings. oh and the companies they bought from went out of business and reformed as another name 3 months later to avoid liability and lawsuits.

Over and under voltage, “They can just tap the transformer down on the network” No sorry, it’s not always that easy They can change the voltage by tapping the local neighbourhood transformer up and down, but this will also affect other people on the same circuit. People’s volts close to the transformer will be slightly higher. People’s volts far away on the same circuit will be slightly lower. [so if you are close and your volts are slightly high they cannot turn the volts down because the other people at the other end could end up with volts that are too low.] [the networks are design to give the correct voltages and power over a defined range of distances, to change this you would need to upgrade the transformer and possibly the entire cable network in the area] One of the biggest problems we are receiving now is the amount of people on the network with solar charging panels on the roof, So instead of the local transformer on the grid being the only power going into the network, you now have multiple sources of power feeding into the same network from multiple locations. You can end up with a load of houses all in the same local area pushing into the network each one raising the local volts of that local area. You send someone out to shutdown everyone’s power off to the network at the substation in order to change the tap settings on the transformer to turn down the volts, then at night when the sun goes down The volts become too low because none of the house’s roof panels are generating. [what are going you do ? Pay vast numbers of people to go out every morning and every night to turn all the networks power off & on again each and every time, to change the tap settings every day ?] When it’s a large solar farm / wind farm / bio generation plant the electric company can restrict and limit each site to the amount that they generate into the network. But you cannot do that to a load of domestic customer’s with panels on their roofs. It is becoming an increasing problem, to which the solutions will be very expensive.

Is EEC the ones who scammed if not? Then, should have blured their charts out as it could give that company a bad reputation and effect their customers

just educate yourself, thats the best way to avoid scams. once you understand the world, its resources, how to mine, purify and create everything then you know if a company is scamming you or not. for example it costs around 20€ to create 1m² solar panel. so if you do the casing and installment yourself you can get 4m² solar panel for under 100€ easily but most people are uneducated and then they let others do it and pay 10 times the price. its happening all the time even with your wedding ring. making a 18K gold wedding ring costs around 300€ but most people pay 10 times that amount. the more educated you are the more you will realize how many companies charge waayyyy too much for the products and you silly person still buy it. the most honest industries in terms of production vs price in store are the auto-industry, the chip manufacturers, the farming industry. the most dishonest industries are luxury brands, especially luxury clothing and jewelry brands, the perfume industry, the real estate companies and many more that are not in my mind right now, just be educated then you will easily realize whether you get scammed or not

What about the scam that are optimisers?

Hold on for a sec. More and more equipment is designed for 220 -230 voltage range, so if you had a voltage ( without solar) of 245, this could be damaging equipment when you start to add grid tied kit. in my exspriance grid tie equipment can push your voltage by 5v per device. so if you have solar, a battery, you're talking + 10v that on top of 245 means you're at 255, and things will pop. personally, we had a VTG unit added to our home, and this, including home battery and solor, pushed our voltage to the braking point. DNO put on a data logger however there voltage was " within range," so they did nothing. we installed a voltage optimisor and problem sorted. The worst one I've seen is a big chain of supermarkets. they have their own transformers, but they installed optimisors across all their stores. was an interesting day when i told them about tapping the transformers down ..... 😅

“More and more equipment is designed for 220 -230 voltage range” Equipment designed to be used in the EU or UK must withstand voltages in excess of 253 volts as that’s what the harmonized standards allow as its maximum supply voltage (230 +10% for the UK)… Any electronics designer is going to allow a safety factor of more than 10% on top of this so 255volts (< 0.8% over the UK’s maximum supply voltage) is going to make little discernible difference!!

@alanwood9804 it does, makes a diffrance when a tiny PCB is Cooked as was my TV, Washing machine, and many LED drivers. more people will start running in to this with solar, batteries ect driving up domestic voltages

@@jameshughesdon5370 If you are blowing up that amount of stuff, I would have suspected you have a more serious issues than the supply being 2 volts over spec… the supply here is nearly always around 248volts and lightbulbs, TVs, Dishwashers, washing machines, Gas boilers etc last for years, and when the sun shines the supply is normally about the 250 - 252v mark as I have 4.2Kwp of solar on my roof and it does raise the voltage slightly. Most of the kit you mention would have a switch mode PSU internally and assuming no PFC the first component after the rectifier is a 400volt reservoir capacitor (depending on topology it could be two 200v or higher voltage caps is series)… theirs a good reason for the cap(s) being 400volts, as 253 +10% AC RMS is 278.3 volts, the rectified peak voltage (√2) for this is 393volts DC so just within spec of the 400volt cap(s). If your blowing up appliances regularly I would suspect something locally to you is causing transient spikes on the supply that well exceed 278 volts. Due to the nature (inductance) of the transformer in the optimiser, this will help eliminate the spikes by filtering them out and stop them reaching your loads.

@alanwood9804 the problems started when we added VTG, my data logger was seeing our standard voltage of 248, then on a sunny day 250> then the battery would push to 255 and if the VTG clicked on at 18.00 when the battery and solar where running it logged 260 for a few seconds before the solar inverter went in to protect. Voltage optimiser solved the problem

I can't hep thinking these scammers worked / owned the original solar installers and are using the info they have on all their installs to fleece the vulnerable. Good work on exposing this, Jordan.

I wonder if the original companies sold on the details of customers at some point. We'd been contacted by someone and they've obviously got our details from somewhere, and we did know the original company had gone out of business quite soon after they were fitted. I wonder how many people think they are dealing with the original company or someone nominated to take over maintenance. My gut was that it was dodgy but I can see how someone might not notice especially with how many installers have gone under.

Thanks for this! Know little about solar but my elderly parents are in the process of getting them and could easily see them entertaining such cold callers longer than they should, will warn them about this. Such a shame the industry is prone to a bust/rename nature with personal information flowing to predators. Seen all sorts of scammers in our area from boilers, insulation, windows, CCTV installers & more.

Super video and an important topic to cover, well done Jordan and the Artisan team. Voltage optomisers were sold extensively around a decade ago. We spend a lot of time removing lots of them these days. More trouble and problems than they ever solved.

They are not being contacted by 'other companies'. They are being contacted by the company that went bust, now with a new name!
