I feel like the action taken against Perry is a byproduct of the teams history regarding internal situations... Chicago doesn't want to get caught in the crossfire with another scandal, therefore being a little more strict with how they handle new issues.

agree. I think the Hawks are super sensitive about this stuff given recent events so they took it down HARD. But as with everything in the NHL, Perry is a guy that its easy to throw the book at. In his late 38's on the back end of his career. No team would do it to their stars, instead it would be "sensitivity training" or something. Admit it, we'd all do the same.

Using Gary Bettman's opinion as a measure of what is and what isn't ethical behavior is probably a bad take. The Blackhawks likely viewed it as high misconduct because it was, and other teams might not ever know what it was. Perry won't ever give the full story if it was that bad, and the Hawks likely won't either. So what we have is a commissioner, most people dislike, giving us the thumbs up on a guy and were supposed to just think "he probably just got a little drunk at a party".

I feel like you're implying that if Bettman is letting him sign with a new team, whatever he did must not have been a fireable offense, but I think it's possible that he did something that would make it impossible to rejoin the Blackhawks org, but leave room to join another team (with many caveats that he will never do it again, etc etc). If the most likely rumor is true (drunken sexual harassment of someone who works for the Blackhawks), it would be untenable to have him back in Chicago and create a hostile working environment for the victim. But he could possibly go somewhere new where he doesn't have a negative history with the staff.

Totally agree. I’ve been wondering about the NHLPA too. Contracts and money are guaranteed unless a contract clause was violated by the player or both team and player agree to part ways. Did Perry have a morality clause? The Blackhawks being sooo vague makes this look bad for them.

I believe what Cory Perry did, was not any actions against the law because that would have come out. My take is that it was something if it had happened to another team, it would not have been a big deal but the Hawks given their recent history took a hard line with it. So it was easy for Bettman to sign off on it for him to join another team.

It sounds like Perry got drunk at a team function and got a little handsy with one of the Blackhawk's staff. Obviously not to the point that it was an assault or even harassment because there weren't any charges filed. Whatever he did, it couldn't have been as bad as the GM made it sound because Bettman would never allow him back so soon. We may never know.
