I've seen a bunch of master lock picking videos where the lock acts like it's a pin short, but it's usually a non-replaceable core so they can''t disassemble the lock non-destructively. well it would certainly be hard to get a hold of the right key blank to make a bump key, so its probably a little more secure than standard locks. A cross pick will work but its pretty specialized and most lockpickers wouldn't have one. So your probably fine, unless some REALLY wants to get in, theyll find a way
@ChipShuhart
17 жыл бұрын
not really, bumping does not rely on gravity. Most European locks are mounted upside-down and can still be bumped. In the video they show the bottom pins passing the shearline then falling down, but in reality the bottom pins stay still and transfer their energy to the top pins. What kind of lock do you have?
@RMoribayashi
8 жыл бұрын
First they reduce the number of pins on nearly all their locks, now they disable a pin as an advertising gimmick. There are a bunch of spp videos where a 4 pin Masterlock opens before the picker even gets to the forth pin. He obviously tapped the "anti bumping" pin and set it without trying.
@NoNeedForAKey

@gastroization I haven't come across one yet but it shouldn't change much when you are picking it. The only thing that I guess would feel a bit different is when you were picking the lock it would feel a bit like a serrated pin but that one little serration wouldn't up the security at.
@ChipShuhart

because there was no demand for it. Though lock bumping has been around for years, the general public did not know about it. Now, thanks to things like youtube and bump key how-to videos, bumping is the new craze. When security becomes breached, higher security follows.
@Willgtl
12 жыл бұрын
It just helps prevent lockbumping at it's basic level. If you know the lock has a bumpstop, you can feel around with a rake or a pick to find which pin it is and fashion a special bumpkey to accommodate for the bumpstop by manually driving it past the sheer line considering it's just slightly below the shear line rather than all the way down.
@TheLargeHardonCollider
13 жыл бұрын
@diefuhreroffunk No the animation isn't accurate, but that's not how bumping actually works. Look up Single Pin Picking (SPP), locks have inherently low tolerance (an actual gap, or "wiggle room"). SPP works by turning the plug slightly so as you move the bottom pin up, the top pin will actually get caught on the edge of the sheer line so you can pick each pin individually. Bumping is the same thing but much faster, the top pins will get caught on the sheer line as they fall.
@SuperPeterpig
13 жыл бұрын
@diefuhreroffunk Hi It was just a animation - it actually works like a billiard balls - you hit the white ball with a cue ?? or "stick" - the white ball hits the black ball - the black ball (top pins) bounce upward and when they pass the sheer line the lock can turn. Funny thing is I'm a locksmith and I have never used bump keys !!! And they use a word "resistant" NOT "PROOF: ! ! !
@RomeAnthem09

@diefuhreroffunk the acceleration created by moving the key fast enough forward allows the force acting vertically on the pin ie tan 45 the horizontal force, this applied force overcomes the acceleration due to gravity, allowing the pins to jump off the key until the energy of the pins vertically upward is full opposed by the acceleration of gravity downward. Physics, people. and the tapered edge on the pins allows the shaft to twist before the top pins fall completely, commmon sense . . .
@diefuhreroffunk
14 жыл бұрын
The way the animation depicts the motion of the pins isn't accurate. According to physics, the bottom pins should only move to the height of the key itself, then transfer the energy to the pins above it (conservation of momentum). The bottom pins aren't going to move to the top of the...ahh...chamber?...and then fall faster than the top ones. The idea that objects fall at different speeds was disproven about 400-500 years ago, and has been confirmed innumerable times since. Physics, people.

They did that on Mythbusters, the myth was busted unless you used a large caliber gun (such as a massive .357 Magnum pistol) at close range, which causes lots of very dangerous shrapnel. Only SWAT teams and soldiers ever do this in real life, and it involves a shotgun, Kevlar body armor, specialized ammunition, and full face protection. Even then, the goal is not specifically to destroy the lock, but to destroy the surrounding door.
@lvdovicvs

I used guns to illustrate the point, which I think you agreed with, that making something illegal only deprives honest people of it. As for information, the same principle applies. I tried to illustrate above that by using the hypothetical of my kid making a bomb by using weird chemicals I know nothing about. If I can't find the information on the Internet or elsewhere, how do I know what he's doing? By the way, my son's 3-1/2 so no need to worry.
@lvdovicvs
17 жыл бұрын
Another interesting point is that the lock picking "community" is the place to learn about the vulnerabilities of any given lock. For example, would you want to know that the lock to your front door is easy to break into because of a design defect? Or would you want that to be kept secret? If it were kept secret you can bet the only ones that would know about it would be the bad guys.
@lvdovicvs

Dude, Look, the criminals already know how to do this kind of thing. That's the kind of education you get in prison, from what I hear. Additionally, most thieves aren't going to bother with this sort of thing, considering a brick through a window works much faster. Or a screwdriver to a window. Or finding an open window or door. Or putting a gun to your head when you answer the door...
@lvdovicvs
17 жыл бұрын
That was my point. Just because you own a gun, you're not going to kill someone, and just because you're interested in lock picking, that doesn't mean you're a burglar. And just because someone makes a spelling mistake, it doesn't mean they're stupid. That's what I was saying. But do I understand your comment to mean that learning lock picking can lead to becoming a criminal?
@yesouisi2500
13 жыл бұрын
@diefuhreroffunk You are correct the animation does not depict the way the pins would move in a real situation, however, the producers of the video most likely exaggerated the image on purpose in order to clarify the fact that there is a brief moment when all of the pin pairs are positioned to leave the shear line of the lock cylinder free to turn.
@complexeddrummer
14 жыл бұрын
@diefuhreroffunk Its not that they FREELY fall at different rates, one system is damped by a spring system at the top of the chamber, the other system isn't, so the pins can fall at a different rate. It's all differential, the bump resistance of a lock would then be inversely proportional to the damping factor, look at mass-spring-dashpot systems, they're fairly similar

The video shows a single bump. Normally you pull the key out one notch and hit it with a hammer while turning the key/plug. Cut back the stop shoulder on the key 1/8" or so. Then put some rubber o-rings in that place around the key. Should be may ofr soft rubber. The when you place it in the plug, you can hit the key over and over, sort of machine gunning. Eventually there should be enough force to knock the special pin up. I havent tried it. Just saw this vid.

@9THSURVIVOR This technology does make picking more difficult (but not impossible). However, most thieves don't bother to learn how to pick locks because it takes skill. Bumping is much easier to learn. If you eliminate the low-hanging fruit, you force them to get a ladder, metaphorically speaking.
@GronTheMighty

Simply make a casing that fits inside the lock, with small holes in the upward surface instead of grooves,insert small plastic rods through each hole that are used to push up the cylinders, and bend them through so you can push each one seperately untill all the springs are compressed completely.
@MasterOfMadmen
14 жыл бұрын
@wichtolosaurus2 The real key will force it up. There is a spring there. They don't clearly explain it. But basically the key itself normally pushes each pin up, but in the case of lock bumping, the shock just sort of rocks them up into position and you turn the key as they fall and catch into place.
