How could they retire this incredible aircraft without a replacement ?
@Kalogerellis
2 ай бұрын
@@AGGD767We did have replacements for aircraft’s like this. We started upgrading and modifying aircraft that we were already building. This roll was replaced by the “EA-18G Growler” it’s easier to modify, maintain, and operate a new F-18 platform. Rather then having a “single role fighter” you can continue to have a multi role fighter that completes main more tasks and easily maintained.

Should be brought back and updated. So many new sub variants out there now. Helicopters can’t prosecute them far away enough and land based P8 Poseidon’s can’t cover the fleet in open ocean. Using F/A-18E/F Hornets for subsurface searches just adds to the mission overload for those airframes. Take the Hoover’s out of the desert and bring them up to current standards. My humble opinion of course.

The navy should take E2 Hawkeye and convert it into a sub hunter. That way the navy save money and the sub hunter version share parts with the E2 version that be a win win.

The P3 took over that mission and was then replaced by the Boeing P8 Poseidon. Going back to the S3 would be a huge step back in capability. My dad was air crew on them for my entire childhood I love the S3 and that beautiful whistle!

@@davidmiller571 The P3 never took over the S3 mission as a ship deployed ASW asset. P3's were around long before the S3 was deployed. The S3 replaced the S2 Tracker. The fleet still has the need for a shipborne long range ASW platform as I outlined in my original comment. Helos are too short ranged and the Super Hornets are doing too many missions as is. If the S3 is brought up to modern standards if would most certainly not be a step backwards. P8's can't cover the fleet like a carrier borne asset can. A carrier borne asset is going everywhere the carrier goes.

@@steveturner3999I agree that a modern carrier based fixed wing ASW aircraft is badly needed especially in light of heightened tensions with certain countries with their own fleets of subs. I don’t know if recalling and updating the S-3 is the answer but it’d probably be better to develop an all new aircraft or even something based off the E-2 platform with as much parts commonality as possible as it’s still in production. Anyone know how many hours they had left on the airframes when they were retired?

Cool video I was stationed aboard the Kitty Hawk from 1999-2002 and we had VS-21 aboard, didn't know they were the first S-3 squadron. In effort to not make things a long story one of my duties on the Hawk made me fairly "popular" I made use of that as I had a lifelong love of military aviation. I will say this real quick just to thoroughly confuse folks, I was an engineer. Anyways one day a friend of mine was showing me the inside of one, the hatch to get in was VERY briefly mentioned to be a bit of a tight fit. Being 5'6 on a good day I didn't think too much about it until I nearly knocked myself out climbing inside lol. It may be a tight fit getting inside but once you make your way into the cockpit it becomes EXTREMELY roomy. Our CO. at the time was a Viking pilot and every opportunity he got to get some flight hours he did a great job making the "Hoover" look cool, it's more agile than you'd think. There's an ancient video on KZitem that's an in cockpit view of a Viking doing the approach and landing on the Kitty Hawk from the Early 2000's.

I loved the haze grey. I was in a P-3/A-3 squadron in the mid 80's and remember our aircraft coming back one at a time in haze grey. They looked great! Oddly enough, towards the end of my tour there were rumors of our old A-3 aircraft getting replaced with the S-3. Do not know if that happened or not. I thought it would have been a huge step up.

I spent two years (1980-1982) working on S-3As for VS-21. Good plane. Reliable, stable and it fulfilled it's primary role superbly. The only complaint I had was that the Lockheed engineers should have positioned the ESM pods on the tips of the horizontal stabilizers and not the wing tips. Every time we folded and spread the wing's, the ESM wiring was cut. Aside from that, she was a good bird. Not particularly terrifying to a surface adversary, but she was damn good at finding subs.

As a kid in the 1970’s and 1980’s, I used to watch these scream over Coronado Beach on their final approach to NAS North Island, doing frequent touch-and-go’s. It was awesome. I didn’t know they only entered service in 1975. I was always puzzled by the loud “whoooooop!!!” Sound they would make that you could hear from a long distance while they were in the pattern. Some kind of resonance as the engines spooled up, I guess. I know I have seen one video here on KZitem of an S-3 making that same sound as it revved up on a carrier catapult before launch, but on the beach you could hear that sound from a long way away while they circled for landing. I always loved the design of this plane. I wish they were still in service. And as China and Russia builds more subs, I wish they were still on our carriers….

Range surveillance and airborne safety observations was a post USN mission…mainly offshore California. Like the A-6/EA-6B and the F-14……S-3 was cut down in the prime of its life…..in addition to the electronic surveillance/intelligence it had a COD…Carrier Offshore Delivery…..not many seats but basically take out the bomb bay and put a few passenger seats. Back before the days of digital cameras and GoPros….I have given the pilots in my squadron my disposable camera to record inflight footage….(safety/workload permitting of course!)

The S3 Viking, had a reputation as a bird with reliable engines and a tough well built airframe. However, my understanding is that the electronics were sensitive to the jolts on take-offs and landings. In Operation Desert Storm a lone Viking did a bombing mission on a small ship. It was a versatile platform and could do many missions. Many have thought about bringing back an S3 "type"

It's a shame that a versatile aircraft as the S3 is replaced by 4! other aircrafts. According wiki "The S-3 was removed from front-line fleet service aboard aircraft carriers in January 2009, its missions having been taken over by the P-3C Orion, P-8 Poseidon, SH-60 Seahawk, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_S-3_Viking#:~:text=The%20S%2D3%20was%20removed,%2D18E%2FF%20Super%20Hornet.
