As usual, I love your videos and the way you explain what you are doing which is so helpful. I am new to colored pencils and already have two different sets, polychormes and pitt pastel. Is it necessary to buy another set of colored pencils or should I just buy individual ones that I need?

Thanks so much! polychromos would be great for a project like this... however in my experience they dont have a lot of light value colors. Pitt pastel pencils are going to be a very different type of pencil and one I don't have too much experience with. I would recommend trying a project with what you have and then seeing if you need some other colors. Then you can purchase these open stock. Many art store have pencils that you can buy individually and you can totally mix and match brands (I just wouldn't mix pastel pencils with traditional colored pencils, but pencil like prismacolor, lightfast, and luminance would be great)

thanks for excellent information on working with yellow. Yellow is a tough color in paint as well as pencil, i've found using violet turns it to mud so easily, so the ochre is a good alternative. btw, the Lightfast pencils in the pale tones are worth the money even if you don;t have any of their other colors.

This is actually very helpful because my friend requested a Yellow Giraffe for my next animal for my monochromatic theme I am doing for them. So I am actually really excited to apply these techniques with it!

hi, is it necessary to use a heavy weighted paper for solvent? what's the minimum gsm you would recommend? Thank you :)

I would recommend a heavier cotton paper. My favorite is Lightfast paper by Derwent. You can try it here: Amazon: amzn.to/3sd8eIJ Blick: tinyurl.com/4dy8cnxy

Yellow is definitely the most challenging colour to work with. I finished a yellow and orange rose in acrylics a few months ago. Fortunately, acrylics allowed me to re-paint some areas over and over again until I was happy with the result! One thing that helped was remembering Matt Phileo’s advice: start with the warm colours and cool them with glazes if you need to. You can’t really warm up the cool tones with glazes. So be careful about going in too cool too fast. I think that’s good to remember if you are working in any translucent medium. You did a beautiful job on your flower. I held my breath while you desaturated with the lavender colour. I had to do that in a spot on my rose and thought it looked too dull close up but it turned out to be just what was needed. If *everything* is glowing, *nothing* is glowing, right?
