I am so pleased to see this video as I spent 30 minutes staring at my grip during serving practice yesterday ... and shifting the heel pad around.... Exactly what you were saying about the diagram and the heel pad is what I was finding. Now I can go back and try using it as an axe 👍👍 I've been videoing and noticing I'm not on edge past shoulder height.... So looking forward to applying this.

England teaches it much better with the "chopper" analogy. America uses index knuckle and heel pad. I am quite sure that the average man on the street in America has no idea what the hell the "heel pad" is.

You've shown this before and you're correct it is easy to believe you have the continental grip but it is the fake version. The heel pad is key and this was the key that finally allowed me to hit a reasonable serve.

This is a life changer. I have a very good serve now (i'm 54 and I quit tennis for about 20 years), but it's not as it was when I was 20 and I had a massive kick. And then I noticed that all this time I had the "wrong" grip, just a little off. Must try to reset that position and try again asap. Thank you :)

Thx for the link to the old video showing you and your mate working on your short/ net game. Left a message there as well, but really great hands, touch and angles .. very McEnroe'ish .. don't see enough of that kind of tennis nowadays. I'd love to see some modern players combine slice, topspin, angled volleys, and low biting/ angled slice approach shots and putaway volleys. Nowadays it seems like players only know 1 way to play .. Power and topspin on everything. Fed used it a bit, but now he's gone. Alcaraz is bringing back the sliced FH drop as an offensive weapon to complement his huge topspin FH, but I'd love to see him incorporate more touch, low, skidding sliced approach shots and angled volleys as well. Just don't see that much among today's players. You might see it if they were doing the drills you show in that old video, but I don't think today's players work on that aspect of their game.

I have a habit of sometimes shifting from Continental grip towards the forehand grip during the service motion. Still working on correcting this habit. And once in a while, maybe once a month, I will hit my left knee on the follow through (am using shoulder-width platform stance). Ouch! 😵 Does this indicate that I may have shifted to forehand grip and not pronated and hence the wack to the knee? If I pronate properly after contact with a Continiental grip, it should never hit my knee? 🤔

Tom how do you feel about using "weak" continental or "2.5" continental for volleys? would that then also be acceptable or even recommended for the serve?
@at1838
Жыл бұрын
I should explain what II mean by 2.5. Instead of putting the index finger knuckle on bevel 2, you put it on the ridge between 2 & 3, heel pad the same. Might this be what the "natural" chopper grip also gives? I don't know, because whenever I've used an axe, it didn't have any bevels ; )
@TomAllsopp
Жыл бұрын
This is why you don’t think about bevels. Get your arm and hand on top of the racket / axe to chop. For the volley what you’re suggesting is fine but you’ll have to hit backhand volleys with your hand in front of the racket. So I’d rather not.
@at1838

I think most of this is right but on the serve and forehand. I'll have my hand as far down the grip as possible to get the most leverage, power, spin. You look like you're choked up on the grip like a volley where control is a premium. On the serve free power is a premium.
@TomAllsopp
Жыл бұрын
Nope. I don’t choke up. Fingers on the grip. The heel should be hanging off the handle.
@IndoChullan

I thought that when you serve, in order to increase wrist flexibility, you should have the butt of the racquet more in the centre of your palm so that the baby finger is barely on the racquet. When you do that, where the base of the palm is, isn't too much of an issue.

Sorry Ole Chap but the Continental grip and the chopper grip terminology, did not originate in England. I started playing tennis in the early seventies. The continental-chopper-Hammer grip was always taught. Remember; America as well as Australia, dominated men's and women's tennis for decades. The two countries had the better skill sets as well as techniques. The bottom of the rack resting in the palm was also taught. With that said, my freaking hand, will not and cannot hold the continental grip, throughout the serve. It's going to keep trying to slide around to the eastern position. The great Oscar Wagner addresses this and says this is natural for the rack to slide around a little bit. I am still going to save some money and have you break down all of my strokes each session and get them up to pro par. I'm not a gambling man but I may have to start playing the lottery. If you can teach this old dawg new tricks, you will make history 😂
@TomAllsopp
Жыл бұрын
It wasn't a history less. Not sure who started it. I just think it's easier to find it when thinking about chopping. My hand doesn't move on the racket when I serve. That doesn't sound good. Sign up to my analysis, you won't be disappointed!
