When im picking a primary optic for an AR, first I decide the primary use of the rifle. Am I shooting mostly at distances out to 600+? I'm going with a MPVO. Am I shooting mostly under 100 at speed and I want something light? I'm going with a red dot. Am I trying to build a do-it-all rifle? I'm going with a prism.

Roy, you have got to quit interrupting Eric, and constantly talking over him. Good grief man. You both share a lot of great info, but damn if Eric can barely get a full thought out before you cut him off. I honestly don't know how Eric keeps his mouth shut about it. @@deangullberry5148 Can't comment on the Aurora reticle due to lack of hand-on experience, but the Raptor reticle they have on the 3x is pretty sweet. The BDC lines up pretty well with the real world ballistics when shooting real M193 zeroed to 100 yards, which makes landing shots from point blank all the way out to 600 yards pretty easy. Just a darn shame ADM is out of stock on their cantilevered mini mounts, so I'm still stuck using the stuff that PA ships with the optic. Good enough for range use but I don't have confidence that their mounts will hold zero after any hard use.

@@deangullberry5148 I recall him being pretty positive towards the optic overall. He talks about how he had the gun with the optic tossed in the back of a pickup and hauled around for a multi-day shooting course, and how the zero never shifted and the turrets never moved a click. In terms of his BDC comments, he says he was using a 62 gr .223 load instead of an M193 55 grain 5.56 load, so of course that's going to impact the BDC calculations. However, it's not too hard to run the ACSS Raptor/Aurora though your favorite ballistics calculator app using your chosen bullet profile etc to figure out the ranges the BDC reticle will line up with at your given zero. The ranging features are going to be the same regardless of ballistics, so they can still be used to get a serviceable ranging estimate. It's certainly not the same level of accuracy you'd get from a mil-dot scope and a Kestrel, but it's about perfect for varmint hunting and defensive uses.
@deangullberry5148

He also pointed out that both the mount, and the red dot bracket were flimsy and bent. He liked the Aurora reticle, but the, and the lens clarity, but the small size was counterproductive to the range capabilities of the reticle. Since I was at your night vision class earlier this year, with three optics, I'll chime in. That rifle is 12.5" Triarc midlenth barrel build with a Swaro 1-6LPVO, an offset SRO in a TRex arms mount and a PA red dot mounted on top of my scope. The reason for the top mounted dot is this: I'm right handed and left eye dominant. I run a WP PVS14 over my dominant eye and FLIR Breach thermal over my right. To shoot passively I can roll the gun inward, similar to what I normally do to see the SRO and the top mounted dot ends up infront of my left eye (PVS14). I do most of my daytime shooting with the SRO, the Swaro is normally on 3 or 6 power. The rifle has a Holoson LE221 and malkov EXIR 250 for night use, plus a white light. Looks complicated as hell but it really isn't bad.

My 10.5 upper that I just have laying around has a vortex w/ bu irons (fixed FSB so why not just throw a rear sight on). I fuck w/ FSB. That’s the 13.7 as well. Personally, I run a 16” with a TA31 ACOG and a top mounted 508T. For an all around setup I think a reliable/robust fixed power prism is the way to go because it’s simple and durable. I have different barrel lengths for different purposes but I think 16” is great because it gives added velocity which would help defeat body armor. I’m also gonna say that I don’t fully understand the craze of LPVO’s especially now when we are all excited about 1-10 or 2.5-10. That’s not all that different than 3-9 (which have always been around) especially since everyone is going to run a dot with those setups. It’s kinda like the risers hype. We used to run high optics and the. We got away from that and made everything as low to the bore as possible then now we are back to high optics. That’s just how I feel about it

Agreed although I think what tends to happen with trends is that they will over shoot the mark and then will eventually dial back to a more reasonable point. I think LPVOs will eventually find that sweet spot and hopefully optimize their weight and function to work best for their given niches. I think what we are seeing with those 1-10s ect is that you can't have it all and you end up giving up performance at 1x or 10x to achieve those specs. 1-6 is looking to be the best for well rounded-ness IMHO but I am no avid LPVO user so take that with a grain of salt.

I ponder about BDCs from time to time and if they are as useful as reviews make them out to be. Currently I run a 16' rifle / 1/3rd red dot with a 50 yard zero and have confirmed that point of aim is for all intensive purposes point of impact out to 300 yards. Looking to take it out to farther range soon and see how it hold up but it makes me question the usefulness of a BDC. My main reason is that if you don't know the distance for certain than the BDC is of little use VS having a zero that will ensure impact within a given distance and anything beyond that will require slight holds. Totally random sorry but something I've thought about.
@theKashConnoisseur

@@biggboysouth Laser range finders exist, and many quality optics feature BDCs with ranging marks in case you don't have a range finder but know the rough size of the target. For instance, PA's ACSS Raptor reticle has BDCs out to 600, and they line up surprisingly well with the info I get from my ballistics calculator when zeroed at 100 yards using M193 ammo. It's got ranging marks that correspond to a man-sized torso at the given distances. So when I'm at the range shooting my torso-shaped steel and paper targets, all I have to do is line up the ranging marks till I see which one fits, an that gives me a serviceable range estimate for me to utilize the BDC reticle.

Looking cool matters, but I'll argue that once you use a variety of rifle setups, you develop an "eye" for what works. If it looks bulky, awkward, heavy, etc, it probably is. If a setup looks light weight, minimal snagpoints, good magnification for small form factor, it probably is better, along with looking better.

Most of the footage I’ve seen in all your videos I’ve seen are you and crew not running suppressors. I get it’s more weight, but if you could grab one rifle for SHTF, I know you’re grabbing that suppressor. And if you’re using your mk12s, it appears those suppressors are usually on there but you’re generally static. So a couple questions: 1. Why do you appear to do your running and gunning training without your suppressor? Is it because weight? 2. Are you zeroing your rifles without the suppressor and then just recording your average POI shifts and adjusting your windage/elevation to that POI average? Or are you re-zeroing every time?

They also give you the mounts,batteries and wrench. My RF AR15 is a heavy miserable pig. I had a 4x( etched glass,cross hairs, lazer,white light, bipod and #1, it sucked weight wise for sure( yes I could see for ever,but it was almost full length of barrel). Now I've changed over to glass ,acog set with irons,and still have white light and bipod ( which all are push button flip or acog slap that sucker to side. And they've all held zero.. ( put some light oil under each item) a touch of blue loktight, then mount it. If you over beat it ,I don't care what brand and how much you spend..it's gonna jerk up,period. As for the weight, it is what it is..mines only 7oz. Lighter then militarys without anything on either. So from there, each item ya add..it's gonna get heavier and carring it all day is not gonna be enjoyable period. You can't have your cake and eat it also. The main worry as you stated is..trend and there are so many copy cat sights and sellers out there you pay with PayPal..and if you get it and it'd junk ( within 30 days) contact company and PayPal and they will either make it right or you'll get your $ back .. just caught your comment about 45 angle irons...just hated them completely.. I'm running irons,acog,glass, Lazer on side. So I'm build8ng this 11.5 inch barrel rig. Never have put a lot of thought into combat optics. All I know is varmint hunting. I know I almost always shoot a dog on maximum magnification. But I don't like the idea of a 6x magnifier and having my red dot or prism reticle magnified 6 times. I don't care for my 1-6 lpvo either and basically ended up leaving the thing on 6 power all the time. Am I just weird or what? Leaning towards just a red dot and irons and literally never even using thw thing other than training and carry weapon and still toting my damn 18 inch coyote rifle everywhere I go. I feel like I need to have a damn sit-down talk with somebody who's tried everything and really understands what I use a rifle for on the daily vs what I'm needing this 11.5" "pistol for. But I really could use some suggestions. What I really want is like a 1-10 but with only two settings, 1x and 10x. And a separate reticle for each. Just a clear cross hair or dot or chevron for 1x, and a calibrated bdc or ranging reticle for 10x as well. The thing I want probably does exist but costs $5k I just don't want to be the nerd who puts another hunting scope on a defensive weapon just b3cause I find every defensive optic on earth to be so fuggin useless.

I would say that an LPVO is likely the most capable optic choice and is the most versatile as it can go on anything from a 10.3 up to 20 or longer. That being said, and given its numerous features and capabilities, there will be trade offs. Whether it’s weight, a true 1x, eye box and relief, parallax or max magnification clarity, there are things where it can’t do perfect on all of those. It’s therefore harder to learn despite being inherently more capable. As such, ease of use will always be a dot or holo with a detachable magnifier if needed. As for number of sighting solutions, I’d say 4 in a perfect world. Glass, top dot, canted sights and laser IR device. I say canted sights because while some would still opt for a canted dot, canted irons are still viable if they want mechanical sights so there’s a sighting solution not purely reliant on electronics or glass that could break.

I think 2x-5x prisms give LVPOs a run for their money in terms of capability. You can easily take shots out to 600+ yards using it like a traditional scope, but you can also run-n-gun in CQB scenarios using occluded shooting/Bindon Aiming Concept. Fits well on everything from AR pistols to 24 inch varmint rifles, and can also handle shotguns and battle rifle recoil. So whether you have a PCC, an AR pistol, a combat shotty, or a SCAR in .308, it's still good to go. Not to mention that even if the batteries die, you still have an etched reticle that will do the job.
@gob7116
Жыл бұрын
@@theKashConnoisseur that’s a valid point and I’d say the same points also apply to an lpvo with one minor exception. Occluded shooting in an lpvo is more of an option since you can run it at 1x and use it like a normal optic. For prisms, if it’s too high of a mag at close range, you are forced to do occluded shooting since you likely wouldn’t be able to see the target when it’s magnified so much up close. That, and variable magnification. Biggest thing for prisms is how durable they always seem to be, especially the notoriety of guys like the acog. Less things to break on em too.

1x6 with off set red dot is all I think you need on a ar there not for shooting a mile 500 and under if your are fighting out side of that rang I'd recommend getting the he'll out of there is the best option because that's over a quarter of a mile I believe you can just get gone and you may live longer if you use that set up on a 14.5 it keeps it light and can do longer range and cqb both just fine

I find the Holosun circle dot tends to starburst less (ring mainly). I have found that the EOTech holographic is pretty clear when target focused. I have heard that the larger dots tend to starburst less for people. My RMR is 3.25moa and is my largest, Holosuns are 2moa, and not sure what my EOTech dot is. I do have a 1x Prism from Atibal Optics, don’t really like it I got it for the fact that it’s etched, but I can’t run it with a magnifier.
@theKashConnoisseur
Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that green dots will generally starbust MORE for those with astigmatism due to the human eye having a much higher sensitivity to green colored light. My astigmatism is bad enough that even 2 MOA red dots look like 10 MOA spike balls. Ended up going with a PA SLx 3x microprism, and being able to dial in the optic's diopter was so nice. Everything is crisp and clear. That being said, my understanding from listening to anecdotes from other dot users with astigmatism is that higher quality glass and laser emitters will create a cleaner dot for those of us with astigmatism compared to the cheaper dots with lower quality glass and emitters. No matter what, the dot will never be as crisp and perfect as an optic with diopter adjustments, but apparently the situation is vastly improved when spending serious coin on a dot. So if you REALLY want to use a dot over a prism, it seems beneficial to buy once, cry once.

Unless you're building out the rifle to run with night vision, I don't see a lot of benefit to a super high riser. After a certain point, you start to compromise your cheek weld on the gun, and thus your ability to manage some of the recoil and to stabilize the rifle. Of course, you can mitigate the cheek weld issues with a butt pad riser, but then you're just spending more money and adding more weight to solve a problem that could have been handled by simply not running a sky-high riser. And even if you're building a night gun, consider whether you could simply train to mitigate the limitations imposed by a lower 1/3 co-witness mount. Plenty of guys who have "been there and done that" managed to run night ops using standard height mounts because they put the time in to master their craft.

Looking for advice/opinions. Finishing up a 16" SPR with Criterion Core1/8 barrel. I have access to Steiner and Leupold dealer pricing so looking at the Mark5HD and the T6Xi. My biggest issue is deciding between a 2-15 or 3(3.6)-18. Mainly used for scoped carbine comps and I have access to two 1000 yrd ranges. Will be adding a backup red dot. I already have red dot and LPVO builds hence the MPVO.

My area is probably 50/50 rolling hills of argricultural land and forrests. 16" AR with a PA 1-6 LPVO. Having run a microdot for some years, I realized how ineffective the RD alone was anywhere outside of a building. I LOVE the 1-6. I'm almost as fast at 1× as the RD, but I can dial it up and reasonably identify and utilize my rifle at a much greater range. It was a battle between Vortex and PA, but the ACSS reticle and zero edge distortion won out on that one.
