Using channel drains that do not have the correct size outlets or any seal where they meet 110mm underground pipes can cause major problems, if a blockage develops in the 110mm underground pipe all water will back up to the point where the channel drain simply sits over the underground pipe, this water will then leak out below the channel drain unnoticed soaking into the soil and gravel below ground level, the ground and walls will become saturated and can also cause house foundation to become unstable. the other problem with these channel drains they do not have any seals where each section butts together, so each of these joints will also let water escape into the ground below. Channel drains are ok for stopping puddling on paved areas where rain naturally falls, providing the water they collect does not escape into the ground close to any buildings. Roof down pipes should connect into110mm underground drainage pipes systems which are fitted with rubber seals on all joints.

Scott, big fan and fellow Cardiffian now living on the south coast of England (don't hold it against me!) - but watching your videos make me feel like I'm back home! Quick question, in this video you are laying the "Not-ACO" along the side of the house. I've been told that the patio should slope away from the house so had intended to put the ACO along the far side of the patio and then run a drain pipe back through a trough to meet up with the gutter drain on the house side. I'd prefer to have the ACO next to the house like you have done - are there any disadvantages to having the patio slope towards the ACO next to the house rather than away from it?

Hi Andy thanks for watching memories of home and as for the drainage channel normally I prefer to work without them if possible as I prefer to direct water away from the house but on this occasion I had no choice. Aco should always be level to the house then run water the opposite directions asap 👍🏴

Hey, loving the videos, they've been super helpful, I have a question about drainage, do you find you have to get planning for this sort of thing? I was thinking of running one along the edge of my house for a new patio and connecting it to the drain where the gutter downpipe goes, but Google says this might actualy need planning? Any advice please? It's causing me a nightmare figuring out drainage! Just want to add, we can't have it running to a grass area because the lawn is on a slight slope towards where the patio would be, and we'll be putting some oak sleepers between lawn and patio, we could have a wide gravel trap I guess? I'm trying to avoid soakaways because it's quite heavy clay here and I'd have to dig it by hand... Sorry for long message, massive respect to you, thanks in advance.

Hi mate, my name is Sam (excuse my jokey username btw 😂)and I'm new to the hard landscaping trade having come from the general gardening and soft landscaping trade mostly. I did some part-time labouring for a Marshalls Accredited landscaping firm years ago and I've been following your videos lately as I've found your work phenomenal as well as educational. I've starting off with smaller patios as well as basic driveways over the past year as I am not interested in general gardening work these days. I've recently looked at a job where the customer wants a little patio installing up against the house with the levels appearing to fall towards the house as opposed to the garden. I'm thinking aco drains as they would look the most aesthetically pleasing however as well as there being the main rainwater drain there is also their soil pipe drain up against the house where the patio falls meet. How do I work around this without damaging the soil pipe drain whilst installing the acos to fall into the main rainwater drain? I know it's meant to fall towards the rainwater drain however this wastewater drain is in the way. I'm not having any luck finding videos nor any clear info on the internet on how to do this properly and safely. Thanks! 😁

Hi Sam so I think I know what your saying as basically you’ve got a waste pipe against the house which is in the way of the aco. Ok so leave that waste pipe alone and just work you aco”s against the waste pipe but have separate connector channels linking up together. Either side of the waste pipe have 2 separate links connecting back together like the Y shape Also like the spice girls song WHEN 2 BECOME ONE 😂👍🏴 Hope that helps

Great insight as ever Scott. I’m thinking of laying a porcelain patio out the back of my house with tiles coming up above DPC of the house (to suit the height of the French door threshold). Do you think that channel drains would satisfy both drainage and surveyors requirements?
@tidybrickslandscaping
Жыл бұрын
Should never be above dpc only level with it using a drainage system like I used there. Last project I had a bifold door drainage section to do which had a tray I had to tile over and my solution was to keep the little vents free to drain through but cutting a section of tile away from this section and allow any possible water able to pass through. Any water which could possibly drain through would be so so little it would not make any difference and the bifold door should be taken off and renewed Hopefully that helped 👍🏴

I have three questions relating to this. Firstly, shouldn't there be a fall down towards the outlet, rather than totally level? Secondly, shouldn't the drains be away from the house wall slightly, with a slight slope from house wall into the drain, so water doesn't get behind drain? And thirdly, is it essential that it all runs into a drainage system, or can it all just run into a soakaway?
@tidybrickslandscaping

Firstly always level against the house or it looks weird Secondly it is away from the wall slightly and is grouted against the house so water cannot drain And thirdly a soak away is also fine 👍🏴

Just watching your videos in preparation for my patio install this summer. I want my porcelain patio to be a near level threshold with extension/bi fold doors. The bi-fold threshold/sill was installed slightly below internal floor level & dpc on the outside course for this purpose.My question is in relation to having my patio only 30mm below dpc. Have you done this in the past? Can I just run these drainage channels around the perimeter of the extension? Obviously there will be a fall away from extension and there is an overhang on the roof of extension. Just thinking about not causing damp problems

Good question Carl I’ve got a job like that coming up shortly and there’s lots of information out there but I’m sure you would be able to run threshold drain along the house for sure the only section which is tricky is the door because the door has its own water vent as well.. I’m not 100% sure myself exactly the right way to do it because somebody will always moan and I’ll be filming it so I will expect people to chip in as well tough call good question👍🏴

The company that fitted the bifold did fit the bifold “I think” around 50mm ,(will have to check)down on the outside course so bringing the patio near internal floor level and below dpc but obviously not the standard 150mm down. As I have an overhang around 500mm on the flat roof not that much water runs down the bifolds anyway. I think I will maybe fit the threshold channels all the way around as a precaution. I’m doing exactly the same now with a customer and the conclusion was not to worry about and water coming out of the door as the solution cost a fortune and very complicated and anyways does any water actually come out of those drips ? Anyways we’re going to lay tiles over the drip but leave a gap in the cement so if any did it would just drop down behind the aco. Hope that puts your mind at ease it did mine 👍🏴

@@tidybrickslandscaping I just did an install like this, i used a soldering iron, bit of poly and made tiny drain channels from the acco to the weep vents. designer specced flush with bifolds. not much info out there on this but this was my fix.
@tidybrickslandscaping

@@JoshSmith-ud3qw I ended up laying a 60mm tile in this space and I ground the tile down where the vent was to allow water to travel under it through to the aco not when I grout it I’ll make sure this area is only grouted the depth of the tile for any possible water to drain. But such a little amount it’s just not worth worrying about or get a new door that’s working properly. 👍🏴

@@JoshSmith-ud3qw I’ve seen that in one of the bifold express branches. How did it work out? Did you bond the aco to the base of the sliders to prevent water creeping between aco and the sliders? Thanks

Great video but these so called drainage threshold things literally only collect a few rain drops from above. They don't take in any water from nearby unlike land drains

Can I ask won't you still get smells, even though it's a rain water drain, as Gully's usually have traps on them, or is that because there multi use (Combined Systems) ?

Question. For anyone. I’m wanting to do this around whole of my property. Is there a way to work waste pipes and down pipes and vents etc rather than doing what’s done in this video or just stopping, then pipe the start again?? It looks horrid otherwise ??? Come on peeps help a fella out.

Have you ever installed these threshold drains higher to allow same floor height on patio as inside house level with the damp proof membrane? I’ve seen plenty of patios with bifold doors with patio at same height but seem to come across conflicting advice. Obviously you would ideally have a patio 2 bricks below DPM but with her mother being unsteady on feet and the baby is about to start learning to walk she wants bi fold doors and a patio that is the same level. I want to avoid damp in the house ... I’ve had a read through building regs and on paving expert and am still a little stumped patio will be falling away from house to a drain the other end of patio, would a line of these along house allow what she’s after?
@tidybrickslandscaping

It would be advisable to have one up against the house anyway for the water run-off from the building it’s a tough one but they’re not Lawes they’re only suggestions don’t forget 👍🏴

Cheers for the good work, I'm enjoying the videos & doing a patio project where it will fall away from the house but starting level is very close to the dpc so using a Dek drains edge slot as a threshold drain but what do you put between the drain channel & the wall? Did you fill the (small) gap with a bit of mortar, would you bitumen paint the wall from level with drain & below to help reduce any damp ingress? Any thoughts welcomed!
