This confirms my belief that feeling negative emotions is not unhealthy. I've learned that allowing myself to feel, not suppressing them only serves to help with me becoming a more emotionally intelligent person.

In DBT emotions are neutral. I'll explain the pros of "negative emotions" Sadness allows you to be more empathetic and understanding. Envy motivates you to achieve something you dont have. Anger allows you to realize your boundaries and self resepct have been crossed. Fear allows you to be alert and escape danger if needed.

I was raised that all emotional displays are bad and result in beatings. Thus, all emotions must be suppressed. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Wipe that look off your face or I'll wipe it off for you." And "Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about."

He is 3 years old. I wish we had a Dr. Tracy for toddlers 😊

Anger.... I was beaten bloody for getting angry as a kid, and learned early on to supress it, stuff it. In my youth I found myself in juvenile court for destroying property. I remember like it was yesterday how gratifying it was wrecking that stuff, smashing, tossing, seeing it turned into garbage. I realize now that I was releasing anger, frustration. I was constantly shamed and ridiculed, all through my youth by family, teachers, administrators... because I tested highly intelligent, yet did poorly in school (distractive ADHD). Somehow, after becoming an adult, others seemed to be able to read me, and figured out how to manipulate me with shame and ridicule... it was relentless until just recently. I unconsciously tolerated it until recently. I'm 73. My elder sister just passed. Her executors were given information on me by her. I do not know these people other than spending an hour or so with them in the past. When I worked at my sister's estate, helping clearing it out, one executor told the other how lazy I was working with them. I don't ever remember slacking.... I did work my butt off... but I obviously did not meet expectations. I got a text from the executor not present, filled with language reminiscent from my childhood. It was filled with the identical words used to shame me as a child. Rage ensued. I've never been this angry, ever. Yet, the supression mechanism kicked in. This anger was so intense, the only way I could handle it was to get drunk, night after night for weeks. I am remarkably healthy for my age. All this booze was detrimental, messing with my already sketchy sleep. Now, when I go to bed after not drinking, I sleep even worse. Yesterday, I talked to an old friend who fancies herself a peacemaker. I expressed my anger, my childhood, the shaming and ridicule. When I expressed anger, she shamed me, right then and there, and told me I need to control it.... Once home I was back in a rage. I didn't drink... but I was up late, and woke at dawn, giving me about 3 hours of sleep. I am compromised today from deprivation. Thanks for lettiing me vent.... I'm seeing a rather ineffective counselor in a couple days... at least I'll get to talk about it.

Very useful info. I was taught that expressions of negative emotions are often something to be embarrassed of. No good role models have I ever seen expressing or venting anger. I dislike being the target of dissociative rage too, merely because I happen to be happy, not freaking out or a convenient target to sabotage or sucker punch.

Hello. To be honest, I don't know who I can turn to. Maybe you can tell me something. I am 19 years old. Two months ago I was prescribed carbomazepine and sonopax (anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts). The dosage was low. These medications were helping me. But then a traumatic event occurred and the medications became less effective. The doctor decided to prescribe clofranil 25 mg 3 times a day. On the second day of taking it, after sleeping: I got out of bed and just fell over, because I couldn't feel my legs, I had a burning sensation in my head, a terribly fast heartbeat and sweating. My mother and I called the attending physician and she cancelled all the medications. The first three days the condition was just awful, it was like everything was changing in my head. My blood pressure was jumping from 85 over 50 to 150 over 100. Now it's been 14 days since I've taken anything. The burning has gone, but what remains is a strange condition: impaired tactile sensations, sleep disturbance, a strange feeling in my head, a feeling of weakness in my limbs and their remoteness (as if I do not feel them periodically or feel them remotely), drowsiness, etc. Before taking clofranil my condition was very good: I went to the gym, studied, did voluntary work. I can't understand what could have happened in my head that now I have this condition. And I don't know if it will go away or not. Can you please tell me what it could be? Is there any way to fix what has been disturbed in my head?

Well, something saved you of that long boring comment , I have to let go and focus on what is left that is to thank you very much for your vids, Imma use them to help my nieces and little demon nephew that are enjoying some adhd syntoms (and we know how little ol' emotions work in those) anyways, many thanks, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

All people have emotions.... Emotions and behavior are 2 different things. Hi Dr. Tracey Marks. I would like to know if fluoxetine works for social anxiety. Wikipedia says "All SSRIs are somewhat effective for social anxiety except fluoxetine which was equivalent to placebo in all clinical trials." Is it true?
@DrTraceyMarks
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t reviewed the clinical trials, but it is not FDA approved for social anxiety. That probably means the company’s data did not show enough effect, or the drug company chose not to spend the money for the clinical trials for social anxiety. That said, it could still be effective as we commonly use medication‘s off label to treat a condition, especially when a similar drug in the same category treats the condition. I use Prozac quite a lot for generalized anxiety and social anxiety even though it’s not FDA approved for either of those. How effective it is depends on the person. Also, sometimes medication only goes so far in decreasing the anxiety around social situations and performance and some kind of therapy is needed to see more meaningful change.
