The Mataram-Bang Wetan War or Mataram-Surabaya War was a military conflict between two political powers in the Island of Java, the Mataram Sultanate (Islamic Mataram Kingdom) and the Bang Wetan Alliance (a coalition of East Javanese kings led by the Kingdom of Surabaya). This War broke out in 1588, triggered by the refusal of East Javanese rulers towards Mataram's claim as the successor of Demak and Pajang, which allow the state to be the highest authority on the Land of the Javanese (Tanah Jawa).
NOTE: This video was a remake of an original video previously uploaded on the 2nd November of 2022.
List of changes & revisions:
- The video's maximum quality has been increased from 720p to 1080p.
- No narration.
- Transcriptions for the events' (peristiwa) description on the left has been bolded, so that they are easier to read.
- The mapping of the rivers (especially the Bengawan Solo and Brantas) has been fixed and more accurate. Also added new details on other rivers in the Eastern Tip of Java.
- The existence of West Blambangan and East Blambangan kingdoms.
- The existence of stateless societies in Java, namely the Ciptagelar people in the Halimun-Salak Mountains and the Kalang people in the Kendeng Mountains.
- The existence of the Kanekes/Baduys in Banten. I depict them as vassals of the Banten Sultanate, since even though they acknowledged its authority and "seba" to its sultans, the Kanekes land were never really penetrated by Banten, so the Kanekes people still held a quit significant amount of autonomy.
- The archipelagos of Karimunjawa and Masalembu are now depicted as stateless societies in December 1599-December 1601, after the fall of Kalinyamat and before they came under the rule of Surabaya.
- Gelgel/Bali's authority over Selaparang/Lombok are still debated. Selaparang was probably only a vassal, not a directly ruled territory.
- Change of interpretation on the Pasuruan's invasion on Blambangan (1596-1601). The state that Pasuruan invaded was the East Blambangan Kingdom that ruled the coasts of the Eastern Tip of Java. The inland areas were never invaded because they were ruled by a different state.
- Change of interpretation on Mataram's invasion on Malang, Pasuruan, and Lumajang (1614). Depiction of the invasion route has revised, from previously shown as a straight line from Kediri to Malang, to now crossed the lowlands in the north, since there's Mount Kelud in the middle. Territories conquered by Mataram were also only Malang and everything to the west of it, since Lumajang was at that time not a part of the Bang Wetan, but instead the capital of West Blambangan. Lumajang was probably only looted, not annexed.
- Kutai Martapura in eastern Borneo still existed up to 1635, so Kutai Kartanegara hasn't conquered it as I've shown in my previous videos.
- The name of the Besemah state (an inland region between Palembang and Banten in South Sumatra) has now been added to assert its existence. Previously, it was shown as a nameless territory.
- Fixing on details for the coastline mapping of Madura, Eastern Tip of Java, Bali, and Lombok.
