People who laugh at Scotland are those who were not alive at the time. After Cruyff's absence, and the retirement of the West Germans, there wasn't any one side that really stood out at the time. Brazil were not as great as they had been and would be and we knew nothing about Argentina because Menotti had played loads of home fixtures in 1977, and nothing they had shown gave any clues as to whether Argentina would win the tournament. You also have to realise that in that Scotland squad were three players who collectively would go on to win the European Cups in 1979, and 1980. Liverpool had just successfully held onto the European Cup thanks to Souness and Dalglish and Forest (with Robertson, Gemmill, and Burns) were good enough to win the title. At a time when the rest of the world was screaming out for great midfielders, Scotland had loads of them: Rioch, Hartford, Macari, Souness, Gemmill. They had the best outside left in world football at the time, John Robertson, and they had one of the best outside forwards in any era: Willie Johnston. They also had Derek Johnstone who scored 49 goals for Rangers that season. They left Andy Gray at home despite him being the highest scorer in the First Division. Anyone thinking Scottish football was shite forgets that they dumped the European Champs (Czechoslovakia) out of the World Cup and the following season, Rangers would dump Juventus and Eindhoven out of the European Cup. Selection was a problem because they lost McGrain to a foot injury (when he was arguably the best attacking right back in the world), and took McQueen when he was injured. But that being said, they still had more than enough fire power to have reached the final. They just had a hopelessly ignorant manager who played Souness in one match; played Johnstone not at all and kept with Dalglish despite the fact that he was knackered. And they also had some really shit luck: against Holland they needed to win by 3 clear goals. In the first 15 minutes of that game, they had 2 legitimate goals chalked off for no reason.

Apparently Jose Videla, the dictator of Argentina and one Henry Kissinger came into the Peruvian locker room before that match- and the Peruvian side were intimidated by their presence. Those two didn't say anything directly to the team- but the presence of two people of such importance in such a private setting never happens unless its the President of the team's respective country. The message was clearly sent without saying anything- throw the game or else.

Sepp Maier wore gloves in 74 and 78 and the gloves he wore were early prototypes of the gloves keepers wear now. If you search on KZitem 'Phil Parkes Talks Gloves' you'll see a short clip from The Big Match where Phil Parkes talks about some gloves he was given originally by West Germany's third choice keeper in 1975 Wolfgang Kleff. The gloves have latex foam palms and are clearly way ahead of their time of the gloves British keepers wore back then. Significant that the big players in the goalkeeper gloves market over the years, Reusch, Uhlsport, adidas are all German.

@@chrisbennett606 A lot of bad teams went to these finals. The only ones who came up to the standard of what is good in the game were Argentina, Peru and Holland. Of the rest, France and Poland for their attacking spirit and Hungary for the way they played against Argentina deserved to be there. As for Italy they managed to fool a lot of people. They defended with ruthless efficiency and tried to counter-attack quickly but ONLY when it was absolutely necessary or when they were certain that it was safe to do so. I am afraid that philosophy is completely contrary to my own. The proof is in the match against Holland; after dominating the first half they took off Causio and conceded the initiative to the Dutch and lost the match and a place in the final.
@hugodrax71
2 жыл бұрын
@@Ruda-n4h You don't like Italy, do you. They were widely regarded as the best team in Argentina certainly up until the second second-round games when they grabbed an unimpressive win against Austria. In Italy many feel it's a better side than the one which won in Spain four years later. You should watch their games against Argentina, Hungary and especially West Germany - no counter-attacking, they were on the front foot. The winner against Argentina is a superb team goal, and not from a counter-attack. I agree they went negative in the second-half against the Dutch and it cost them (although Cabrini has since said they had run out of energy against Holland because they put so much into their earlier games). You could argue Brazil did the same thing against Argentina in their second second-round game. Coutinho went cautious and got a 0-0 but many felt he should have gone for a win which would have put Brazil in control of the group. Poland were completely forgettable in '78 - a shadow of the '74 team. Holland took an age to get going and were also very physical. As much as I admired the Dutch in the 70s the reality is that they won only three of their seven games in Argentina. Peru were entertaining in the first round but then completely collapsed. France, I agree, were very unfortunate not to progress - some poor decisons in their decisive game against Argentina, especially the handball against Tresor. Hungary lost all three of their first round games so not sure why you think they deserved to progress.
