With a broken front bumper and missing front tyre, this Matchbox 15D Volkswagen 1500 Saloon Beetle presented a bit of a challenge. I needed to recreate that front bumper using two-part epoxy while managing to attach the newly moulded part using the existing fragile attachment points. I don't think my fix was perfect but it was a definite improvement.
This was the second of two Beetles in the regular wheels 1-75 Matchbox series, with the older 25B Volkswagen one that I'd tackled a long way back. That model was discontinued in 1964 and this one arrived in 1968. It was coloured off-white to cream, similar to the 1963 VW Beetle "Herbie" from The Love Bug film released the same year as this casting. Lesney purposely steered clear of numbering this 53, giving it 137 instead.
The real 1500 arrived in 1967 and was named for its 1500cc engine, the largest production engine fitted to a Beetle at that point. The entire rear suspension needed revising as a result. Then in 1968, the bumpers were revised which are represented on the casting, now higher and more prominent than those fitted previously.
