The United States’ maternal mortality rate is at an all-time high. Instead of experiencing the joy of growing a family, these families are being ripped apart through tragic death. Many of these deaths could have been prevented. This harm is more widespread in black communities as black women are more likely to die during childbirth than white woman. In combatting this crisis, many states are looking for tools to protect moms and babies. One tool that states are utilizing is covering Doula services through Medicaid. This presentation will provide more information on the maternal mortality crisis in Tennessee and will explain what a Doula is, and how Doulas can help address the maternal mortality crisis.
