Jo Boaler's ideas are not about raising the bar on learning math. It's all about lowering standards so everyone does equally poor. One clear example of her ideas (delay acceleration of math until later years) have been put into practice in San Francisco Unified School District and it has been a disaster, especially for the under represented minorities it was intended to help.

Very few people would ever understand Fourier analysis let alone abstract algebra even if their life depended on it. And there are people to whom they come rather naturally. It's simply false that everyone is equally talented and capable in mathematics.

I don't think "softball interview" properly describes the extent of obsequiousness and lack of any tough questions in this podcast. Very reminiscent of when Trump got interviewed on Fox News. Jo Boaler has very Trump-like qualities in her lack of ability to take any criticism and personally attacking her critics while failing to actually address any of the substance of the criticism.

So much to say about this, but I'll just leave it at this: detracking hurts poor kids, keeping them from accelerating and placing them all in Algebra 1 without options to advance. Hey, the kids with rich parents will just work around this and pay money to outside facilities to accelerate. The poor ones can't afford this work-around. Why accelerate? Maybe they are that smart smart and hungry to learn. Not fair to them. This also overlaps many underrepresented groups. In addition, watering down curriculum and saying it's better actually hurts mathematical understanding in the long-run. But, hey, what do I know? I'm simply someone with an actual math degree (not education) who has been fighting racism and trying to help poor kids in my own classroom by giving them entry points and leading them to rigorous content. It just takes building confidence, not changing the curriculum.

Such a travesty. It’s all about money. When I have implemented Jo Boalers teaching methods in the classroom it’s amazing to see the results. She is amazing.

"About the money" -- that may be true for Boaler, but certainly not for her critics. Boaler claims that her critics "have their own products in direct instruction and timed testing." She might as well have named Greg Ashman, who has criticized Boaler's use of data and who has written a book on direct instruction. But, in fact, he just wrote on Twitter that he has made less money from writing an entire book than Boaler charges to underprivileged school districts for ONE HOUR of consulting on a Zoom call. And Brian Conrad (a Stanford math professor) has done an unbelievable amount of work documenting all of the factual errors in Boaler's work with the California Math Framework, and he isn't making money from it at all.
