You said you normally run the bottom of your arrow directly through the center of the Berger hole, but since this is a shorter ATA bow, you’re going to run the center of the arrow through the center of the Berger hole. Can you explain what the reason for that is?

Squatchin Outdoors - I’m glad you made the leap to saddle hunting! There’s nothing better in my opinion!! I love the Mathews bows, but I wouldn’t ever represent something other than it is. It’s possible that the VXR you shot was out of tune, and that would have changed the way it felt, but I’ve never had a bow that was so smooth, dead in the hand, steady on target, with a solid backwall, and silent. My Vertix was my favorite bow of all time.... until I shot the VXR! I’d strongly suggest shooting one that’s in time - let me know if you do and what you think!!

Hunt Urban Hey man maybe that came out wrong.... I know you wouldn’t falsely represent a product. The one I shot was fully tuned as my buddy was buying it. I planned to buy one also but wasn’t blown away. Maybe I’ve just grown to love the Vertix. I shot a a few bows that day fully tuned and setup. The VXR 28 was nice and I’m definitely a Mathews fan, but I just didn’t see major improvement personally. Either way I love your videos, I’m an urban hunter in central Indiana so it was cool to see you doing the same thing I’m doing. Have a good day man !!!

I bought a 2020 VXR 31.5 and have hunted with it for a couple years now. I recently reduced my draw length and after a few other minor tweaks I can't seem to get bullet holes. I've adjusted the integrated rest slightly to the right to reduce the nock left tear but I can't get it smaller than about 3/8" inch. What do I do with these "tophats" in order to eliminate that nock left tear completely?

My local "Pro" shop doesn't even have a draw board, and if they did, they wouldn't know what to do with it. They couldn't help me get my Triax perfectly in tune when I first bought it, and a year later its still not in tune because it is "good enough" without changing the tophats. They didn't even consider doing that when tuning it.

So you get the timing right then take it out of time to accommodate for vertical tears?
@HuntUrban
4 жыл бұрын
No - setting the timing on the draw board is close, but it doesn’t get it exactly correct. You can’t replicate your grip pressure or exactly how you pull on it with a draw board, so it requires you to shoot through paper to get exactly perfect. That’s why it’s so important to ensure the arrow is dead level at set up, so you don’t have to take your bow out of time.

Great video. But I'm not really seeing this is way better than the Vertix. Guys out there killing deer with Mathews bows from 10 years ago. If I did anything I would pick up a Traverse with the string angle it has. The VXR almost seems gimmicky. Longer riser but short changing on the string angle.

I had the same thought....until I shot the VXR. I was really impressed with how well it holds on target, how much smoother than the Vertix it was, and how well it holds on target. There's no doubt that bows last much longer than their marketing cycle does, and I have buddies killing deer with old Helium's that still work great - but this VXR truly is dead in the hand and driving tacks!! I have a traverse as well, and love it also. At the end of the day, they're all great bows, and you can tune them all the same way - just find the one that works for you and get shooting!!

Well 2 months ago i flippantly said there was no reason to upgrade to a VXR from a Vertix. That was until I picked up a 31.5 and couldn't believe how much balanced it is. The top heavy feel of the Vertix and most of the Mathews since the Halon series is completely eliminated with this bow. I can't stress enough how the balance will give a shooter a far better holding experience. Well I got one and now the Vertix is my backup! My question for Mr Hunt Urban (and Tethrd Prostaffer) when is a bow in your opinion considered tuned? I have paper tuned and am getting good results with walkback tuning. My bareshaft and fletched arrow groupings are very close at 20 yards but the bareshafts are sometimes kicking to the left. Any advice? And yes I got another dang integreated QAD rest as they are the perfect match for the VXR.
@HuntUrban
4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new purchase! I was in the same camp as you, and was blown away at how balanced, smooth, and how rock solid on target the VXR is!! For me, after bare shaft tuning at 6’, then shooting through paper with a fletched arrow at 13-15 yards, once the fletched arrow is a PERFECT bullet hole, I’m done. Out of hundreds of bows, I’ve never had one not shoot everything perfectly after my tuning process. Just like anything else, it pays to have the solid foundation, which in this case is making sure the arrow is perfectly level and running properly through the Berger hole, and at 13/16. After that, time it, then shoot it and make micro adjustments... can’t beat it!

I use painters paper that you can buy on a big brown roll at Home Depot. With a nock low tear, Start by advancing the top cam (on a Mathews, that would be a twist into the bottom cam). SOMETIMES, this won’t fix it, and you’ll need to advance the bottom cam, but that’s only happened to me on a handful of occasions.

Brian Case - I bare shaft tune at 6’, but then shoot a fletched arrow at 15 yards. It’s amazing how perfect of a bullet hole you can get with a bare shaft at 6’, yet how much of a tear you can get with fletched. Fletchings definitely stabilize an arrow, however, they don’t get it flying perfectly, rather, they mitigate the error in flight. If they corrected the arrow perfectly, you wouldn’t have to tune a bow at all! For the rests, I’ve had success tying them in both ways - with, of course, the only one I’ve ever had an issue with being my d-loop knot the minute before a hunt!! I’ve just gone back to a traditional tie in method on those for now.
