"Matilda - Who Told Lies and was Burnt to Death" is one of the stories written in verse in the book "Cautionary Tales for Children" by Hilaire Belloc. This vintage book of moral stories was illustrated by Basil T. Blackwood.
The young Matilda has a rather unsavory reputation - for telling lies. One day, driven by boredom, she calls the London Fire Brigade out to an imaginary fire. The fire fighters do a good job of soaking the home where she lives with her aunt. It takes a lot of effort on the part of her aunt to convince the firemen that its just a hoax thought up by Matilda. Matilda's aunt is obliged to pay the London Fire Department for their wasted efforts.
As punishment for her dishonesty, Matilda is left alone at home when her aunt takes a night out at the theater. This time, a real fire breaks out, and Matilda does her best to summon assistance from passers by. Unfortunately, Matilda has been labelled as a liar by her community, and they readily assume she is once again "crying wolf" just to get attention. Sadly, Matilda's reputation for dishonesty screams louder than her cries for help, and no-one rushes to her aid. Matilda dies in the flames - thanks to her reputation as a liar.
