I cried watching this video. Our family had a house on Matincus Island for 20 years. Ever since my dad passed away, we never went back. I love Matincus Island.

Matinicus is not a place that caters to sailboats. Boats do pause there for shelter, but there are not shoreside amenities to greet you nor pubs in which to gather in the evening and be "entertained" by the locals. These are working lobstermen and their families. Dropping by once and not having a "friendly experience" is not the same as taking the time to get to know the island culture, the history, and the fact that their entire livelihood is tied to the sea and the catch and the weather... and onshore officialdom who try to make decisions and regulations that often have no link to realities of life on a very small island. To better understand, get a copy of Well out to Sea by Eva Murray who came to the island to teach in their school and wound marrying an islander and raising a family. It's a great read as are the many columns she has written about life on the island....some of which can be found here: freepressonline.com/Content/Columnists/-From-Offshore/50/167

What was the aftermath of the shooting there in 2009? Did island residents get to lobster that island coast area without interlopers from the mainland -- and accept a 300 pot limit, as another lobster island did? With so many people cutting buoys around there, I'd think a diver could find a lot of ghost traps. Some might even have lobsters in them.
