I’ve been over-sardined out & have not wanted any for a few weeks now but I’ve kept my can of Matiz (w/ lemon) out on the counter to remind me that i need to eat some soon (for their health benefits). Finally i watched a new video of yours the other day & it got me craving them again so I opened my can of lemon Matiz (Ive never had this brand before & I don’t remember how much they were). OMG these are sooooooo delicious! I love to open the sardine & eat the spine 1st then put it on a ritz cracker w/ a little cream cheese spread on it. That was the way i was 1st introduced to sardines back in high school from my Dutch friend & thats how i always want to eat them, it brings back good memories. I also found some frozen sardines at a fancy market here in Austin & I’m looking forward to cooking them on the grill.

Don't know about you. I'll bet I'm quite a bit older than you. But I really miss the older cans for canned sardines . They didn't have a pull tab. They all came with a funny looking little key, usually attached to the side of the can. The key was about an inch and a half long and made of metal. There was an oblong opening at one end of the key and then a tab on top of the can that fit perfectly into the hole on the end of the key. Then you just slipped the tab into the key and began rolling towards the other side of the lid. There was no razor sharp lid to dispose of. The top just rolled up into a tight little roll at the end of the can. Much easier and practical. Guess pull tabs were just a cheaper option for the manufacturer.

David, I'm old enough to remember when these were on sardine cans. My Dad shared them with me when I was pretty small. They probably went away by the time I was a teenager in the 90s. Now they put those pull tabs on all canned goods, not every day I have to get out the can opener. Thanks for the memories.

Hey fizz! You know, Fishwife was great, but it's not my favorite of my videos. It's a fantastic smoked tuna, but more than anything, it was just such a pleasant surprise to find a well-hyped product actually be very good! And it was also my first experience with smoked tuna as well. My favorite has probably been the small Ramon Penas ("Luxury Sardines"). This was my first mindblowing experience with a relatively expensive can. It's my first interaction with Ramons, caught on tape, and my genuine joy is hard to replicate. I just ate and enjoyed a can of Matiz lightly smoked deenz. They were fantastic! On another note I have been searching for weeks now the interwebs and culinary underworld for those skinny metal chopsticks with the pointy tips that you feature in your late videos. I finally found some on A man zone. Snow Peak Japanese style fine chopsticks. Having said that the Matiz smoked deenz were 3 big pilchards with a few scales, nice and firm, and with a perfect amount of smoke packed in Spanish olive oil. I ate them with those tiny little pointy chopsticks and Lord have mercy! What an eye opener. I have used chopsticks for years albeit a bit clumsy. These dudes make me feel like I can perform brain surgery. They rock. So much so that I ordered another pair. But they ain't for cheapness but worth every penny. In summation..the Matiz are quality deenz for less shekels than Bela's or Nuri's and I would rate them right up there with them although I reckon the Nuri's are still the apex predator of canned sardines and why? Because the Extra Spicy Nuri's to me are like sex in a can! What are we even doing here? Commenting about eating canned sardines with chopsticks. What an amazing world we live in. Mahalo!

Hey Kayla, I'm not too sensitive to smokiness, so I may not be too much help. There are a lot of varieties that are "lightly smoked". I just went through my cupboard and I'll be damned if they don't all mention smoke somewhere on the wrapper. If it says "Smoked" before the name of the fish, you know you're in for it. If it just mentions it somewhere, a lot of times the taste won't be too obvious. I guess it depends on your tolerance. Hope that helps.

@CannedFishFiles

They must have some way of yanking out the guts when they slice them up. I saw a video about it, but it just looks like the whole fish go into a big steel box and then come out headless and cleaned on the other end. In this video I really think they missed a liver or something. I called it "dark meat" but it had to be some kind of organ. I don't think I wanted to say it at the time.
