Matrix ONE, the newly completed laboratory and office complex that serves as the main building in Amsterdam's Matrix Innovation Center, is designed to be demountable, so that 90% of the building's materials can be reused. In order to make this possible, elements are separated into categories based on their expected lifespans - furniture, for example, has the shortest lifespan, and the supporting structure the longest - and categories with shorter lifespans can be upgraded or removed without impacting those with longer lifespans. Simple connections such as screws and bolts allow elements to be detached and reused when various parts of the building are updated.
The building’s digital model, with over 120,000 individual elements, has been included in Madaster, an online database that provides a comprehensive material passport - documenting all materials and products used in the building for potential future reuse.
