I saw him throw a pitch during the 2008 season against the SF Giants. He threw it to...I think it was Rich Aurillia. It was 85 MPH and the rotation was like a reverse slurve/flat curveball. The break was odd, kinda like a sideways splitter. It was similar to this pitch in this video, except it had more horizontal movement and it dove harder

According to NPR, the gyro doesn't necessarily break laterally, rather, it has the speed of a fastball but has a sharp break -- almost a curveball-style break. So it's kinda like a cut fastball except a lot more dramatic.

a true gyroball is supposed to have little to no break. yes, it has bullet spin. but what this does is eliminate air resistance to the pitch thrown. Hence, the only forces acting against the ball is gravity. the tricky part to throwing a true gyro is the form and release point one needs to have in order to throw it. the ball must be released from the side of the hand, rather than on top (curve) or behind (fastball). since many pitchers cannot throw it right, they usually end up with a slider.
@billygates29
17 жыл бұрын
Tezuka's double-spin mechanics--which involve the hips and shoulder rotating simultaneously--and a sidearm delivery create the correct conditions for a gyroball, due to the pitcher's arm slot and body positioning. When a gyroball comes into a hitter, no seams should show. The gyro looks like a plain white sphere. So unless no seams are shown to the hitter, it's not a gyroball.
@sliickers

to the batters eye it would look like a cutter or a screw but it actually drops. it doesnt have a late break, rather it has a constant downward movement to it, so its not a very useful pitch and is usually easy to read by batters, glad i could inform you

shutto is a two seam variant which has less sink, more lateral break. like a reverse slider/cutter.
@IxEH05xI

That is exactly how I grip my four-seam fastball. He could be throwing it so that it tails down. Also, his release could explain the break. He releases it at a 1-7 angle. This alligns the seams so that he is essentially throwing a four-seam curveball. The pitch breaks from Twelve to Six, or straight down. It is quite possible that the gyroball is just a 1-7 release illusion that really immitates a 4S 12-6 curveball.

its all physics. if you know physics and the way high and low preasures work, anyone can see all pitches except for a knuckleball are related in someway. what makes this pitch different is where the axis of rotation occurs. tilt it up and back one way, it becomes a curveball or slider, the other way and it becomes a screwball.
@PantherU

Slurve moves much differently depending on location of the pitch. The finger placement is right, the spin is right, and the placement (low in the middle) from where he lets it go is the movement of the slurve...if it were a sinker, that pitch would have ended on the inside corner.
@zubinmadon7696

@ajlepisto Yeah, you're right, it's either a cutter that didn't cut, or a shuuto that didn't break. The Gyroball is a real pitch, but the gyroball doesn't break downward.
@cael87
14 жыл бұрын
look at his hand at release, this i a 12-6 curve. a gyroball you flick your wrist out toward third base, here he flicks it downward giving it a forward spin, to produce a gyroball you need the same kind of spin as a bullet or as a football flies when it's passed.
@aznelf13
16 жыл бұрын
it's pretty much just a diagonal spin so it cuts thru the air resistance to give it a fast gravitational drop, kinda like a forkball but will a really slow start.

@DaveSomething1 Exactly thank you! It's either a sinker or a modified slider or change-up! Mariano Rivera's sinker has more bite than that! I'm leaning towards sinker or change-up!
@fatshady95
13 жыл бұрын
It's not a sinker because he didn't pronate, it's not a change-up because there are a lot of ways to throw a change-up and that's not one. It moved like a splitter but it's not a splitter because of the grip. If you throw the gyroball correctly it has NO MOVEMENT at all. It's because if your spin is tight enough it will stay on the same plane. It was designed to take stress off the arm because of your hips and it looks faster than it is. That's it.

The pitch does exist, but it is of no use in baseball. The gyroball is spinning like a football along the axis where the ball is mocing. This does almost nothing to a baseball. It's a nothing pitch. However, the pitch is effective after it bounces off the ground, known as "googely" in cricket. The only reason this pitch would get a batter out is if the rotation of the ball were to fool the batter to believing it was going to curve. Hence, pitchers can get outs with this 'nothing pitch'
@Rambo28

clearly this pitch does not show anything that would constitute a gyroball. His hand is pronating in the opposite direction that a gyroball would, and if anything, its producing a spin that moves downward and inside on a right handed batter.
