From what I understand (and I'm mostly a noob on that topic) there is a quite serious (in regards to instruments, costumes, make-up, language) medieval folk scene. The medieval metal artists combine both worlds, so one will barely find a band in full costume without elements of modern times/ metal style accessories. And if you have a closer look to Feuerschwanz, you'll notice how playfull they are with their costumes: missmatching and with well thought through ridiculous details. Like guitarist Hans with his long coat and top hat, drummer Rollo in a motorcycle leather vest with fur collar, the two "Miezen" (Mieze is a pet name for cat, like Kitty but is also an outdated way to refer to a girl, amost like "chick" in English), their dancers/ stage & video preformers, who often times have plush cat tails attached to their costumes and wearing hairbands with cat ears and so on. Saltatio Mortis (Latin for Dance of Death) usually have German lyrics but do covers in English too (like Hypa Hypa from Electric Callboy). Vocalist Alea der Bescheidene (Alea the Humble) was guest vocalist on Feuerschwanz' cover of ManOwar's Warriors of the World United (that one also features Melissa Bonny from Ad Infinitum and Thomas Winkler ex-Gloryhammer, now AngusMcSix). Both of S.M.'s bagpipe players feature on the live version of Schildmaid (Shield Maiden). And then there is the song Kaufmann und Maid (The merchant and the maiden) which originated as a song snippet from a satirical skit that ridiculed the medieval folk rock style on a German comedy tv show, featuring the pop singer Sasha (he also recorded a pop version of Hypa Hypa with Electric Callboy). Some artists from that scene found it so funny, that they offered Sasha to record it as a full song with him (kind of as medieval-allstars). Solo artist Patty Gurdy, Hans from Feuerschwanz, Ben from d'Artagnon & Feuerschwanz, Alea from Saltatio Mortis, Simon Michael & Ally Storch from Subway to Sally (with Ally not appearing in the video) and Teufel from Tanzwut collaborated with Sasha, who was credited as "Sasha der Barde"(Sasha the bard). It's quite hilarious but definately not metal.

German band , considered medieval metal. Metal didn't exist in Viking times either, lol. Saltatio Mortis is the band name, Alea is the lead singer. He has worked with Feuerscwantz.

Saltatio Mortis are not a purely Viking band, they do lots of videos in lots of different styles. (And btw, not everyone can wear contacts. ;) ) They have made some songs in connection with Skyrim, and recently, with Peyton Parish, one referring to God of War - but I think "My mother told me" ist their only Viking song. "Pray to the Hunter" is the only Video of them I know in which the band members (apart from the lead singer Alea, who portrays the main character and so far has had an acting part in many of the band's videos) are not seen playing instruments, but actually make a brief cameo appearance in the video. In costumes and methinks also without any glasses. :) As for the Holmgang ritual, it's a procedure of arbitration. If two warriors inside one clan got into a fight or an argument and none of them would back down, in order to avoid a feud and more bloodshed, a Holmgang could be announced. This was basically a fight between the two ppl involved in the conflict, with real weapons but no armour. And whoever drew blood first (I mean, hurt his opponent first), won, as this was considered a sign by the gods that this person was in the right. While someone who would back out of the fight or back down, was supposed to show by this that he was in the wrong. The fighters were supposed to strike with all their heart. Yet, people were not necessarily supposed to die. It happened, occasionally, but if so, it was more or less an accident. Someone who intentionally went for killing his opponent in a Holmgang, eg by aiming at vital body parts, was usually expelled from the clan. In this particular case, the result was a draw. Which was rather fitting IMHO, as the quarrel that broke out was completely stupid to begin with and there was neither wrong nor right. ;) Edit: Several typos corrected.

@@MattsMoshPit1 Always welcome. :) To add up on that: The video was - apart from the landscape at the beginning - shot at a German location belonging to a club doing Viking reenactment. Unfortunately , it‘s not anywhere near the sea, but still a great place for this video, I think. One can also visit it, I think, or at least could pre-COVID. Alea, the singer of Saltatio Mortis, is into cosplay and afaik, he makes most of his costumes for these videos himself. I have the impression that whenever they do a sort of fantasy-themed video, they invite over all of their cosplay and LARP- and reenactment-affine friends to whatever place suits the video best, and have a blast. 🤣

Just saw this, sorry for the late reply. What the video portraying is the Norse method of settling disputes called Holmgang. It is a duel between two men (yeah, I know they show a woman in the video but that wasn't happening for the Norse) with strictly observed rules.

No need to apologize. It doesn’t matter how late you are to the party, just as long as you get there. Thank you for the insight to song and video. I always appreciate learning more about this stuff.

They aren fully Viking music. This was a video with strong bonds to the game "Assassins Creed: Valhalla" which is set in the vikingn era. They normally do band shots in their videos "like in concerts", so no reason to dress up for every member. The leadsinger also do cosplay as hobby, so he's more into the roles and costumes for videos ;)

You don't seem to notice that they are jumping between two scenes, including costumes. Guitars don't belong in a historical setting either, and look again: they are not in it. The historical set looks like it took some effort. Surely not historically accurate in detail, but nobody just winged it. In contrast, when showing the band, the lead singer's clothes are also not hiding modern features, even if with a viking/metal theme. This is more like the band taking us back in time than the band being from back in time.

I did notice there were two different scenes. It would just be cool if they stayed in costume, assuming their music is all old Viking style. It’s all good either way. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for watching
