The gesture at 1:52 too. I always wondered how much is it possible to act a personality. I don't think it's very possible for most actors. Most play similar roles over and over, they just act the lines and the emotions.

For those who don't know Newton and Brookline are considered by bostonians as being wealthy ritzy areas. The working class part of Newton is Nonantum where Joey is from. Nonantum is known by locals as " The Lake" . I lived in Newtonville for a few years ; which is just a few blocks away ,and I loved Nonantum! One of the most "authentic" feeling Italian neighborhoods ive been too. From the architecture to the old school italian resturants. If you ever are in the area make sure you give this area a visit! The yearly Italian festival there is a blast too ( best Gnocchi i ever had) And yes people really do talk like that !

Are you kidding? Obviously you don't know Nonantum. I'm from Newton. In fact I graduated Newton North with Matt and Louis CK in 1985. Nonantum is called The Lake by us locals. Matt left right after high school. So did Louie. Louie told me senior year that he was going to be a comedian. I thought he was nuts. His career is over anyway. Matt's description of that Italian American street dialogue is so spot on It's hysyerical. I disagree with Jay the tourist. For an Italian section there is a dearth of good Italian restaurants in the Lake. You're better off in the North End. But if you're a Matt fan go to Giuseppe's sub shop and get the meatball and cheese. It's Matt's favorite spot down the street from his mother's house. And every August they have Elvis day featuring Monk Pelly as the King.

Moosh used like hey moosh, is a Welsh slang word for buddy/friend we also have boyo and butt as in butty/buddy. Last time I checked there was a large number of Welsh settlers in Massachusetts this could be the reason for Matts town using these words. Awesome! By the way i'm from Wales... Hello/Shw Mae!

Yes that might well be its nickname now. But thats irrelevant to the towns forming and where the original settlers came from and where the word moosh came from which is Wales. Interesting fun fact Wales and Israel are the exact same size landmass wise.

Luke, you are correct in the sense that we have a strong English influence from the original settlers. But in the Nonantum (The Lake) we adopted the language from Romani or Roma Gyspy families that lived there around the turn of the century.

I’ll try not to repeat things said in other comments. I grew up on the border between Newtonville and Nonantum(Central Ave!), went to summer camp at the Boys and Girls Club in Nonantum and graduated from Newton North in the late 90s. Matt was our ‘famous' graduate(Louis was entirely unknown to us at the time) and my Italian teacher(Mazzola!) told us all about attending NNHS with him & knowing him in Nonantum. Sidenote for Conan: our town rival was Brookline and the Thanksgiving football game against them was HUGE, but our school rival was Newton South, who we loved trouncing at sports meets(with a much bigger student body it was basically cheating), & where John Krasinski & BJ Novak graduated one year before I did. Funnily, in my senior year, I suddenly auditioned for Theatre & a buttload of new things, did the annual cross-Newton Shakespeare play, and sorta met all the Newton South Theatre Kids, 1 year too late to be someone famous people very faintly remembered, if at all, from high school. Kids from ‘The Lake’ were known as ‘Mushes’ at NNHS and ‘Mush’, ‘Jival’ and ‘Divya’(crazy) are the three words I distinctly remember finding most ‘un-italian’ sounding. Having gone from 7th to 12th grade with an Italian Major, being a toddler immigrant with Italian as my first language, going on the Exchange in 11th grade where I was mistaken for a Native speaker(way too proud of that!); I often wondered why those words of Lake slang didn’t sound as similar to italian as other regional dialects & 'italo-americano' phrases, also commonly used by the Mushes. What everyone says is that all the Italians in the Lake emigrated over time from 1 town in Italy, San Donato, Lazio; a 1:45 hour drive SW of Rome. If what people are saying in the comments is true, these three terms may be more ‘Romani’ than 'technically Italian’ but the two languages have tons in common, ‘Roma’ being the capital, after all and the Romani being such a native part of Italy, especially Lazio, that they're also Italians(or not, if they prefer, idk) & their language’ though considered different, is sorta like another kind of Italian Dialect. I never thought I ‘fit’ with th Mushes; cuz I was Italian-born, hadn't moved to Newton till 2nd grade, had mixed heritage parents w northern italian roots(everyone else was Southern and there’s always been enmity), didn’t ‘technically' live in Nonantum, leaned more to Hip Hop & Soul than to Rock & Metal, and my somewhat-hippie parents raised me differently (w my ADD+) making me less jock and more artsy, but I GUESS that The Lake being romani-influenced adds a whole other facet to why it did seem too-clique-y to believe at times. I’m so glad for new info and I'll always love Newton and the Lake! Now I can’t wait to hit the Summer Festival again with new insight! This interview and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonantum,_Massachusetts, BOTH, blew my mind & brought everything rushing back! Hopefully someone I knew, will get famous next!

'Mush' is an English term too, Southern (I think). I was born in Brighton and my Grandad called me it all the time, I still use it to this day! It was also a term for 'face', but is generally a replacement for 'dude', as Matt said. This is the end of my lesson, you may now leave, mush.

It comes from a combination of words starting as either Romany, English and Italian slang from the pre 1940's.
