Matthew is always such a fun guy to listen to! I love that despite a pretty rockin' and well-earned career in film, he's an RPG nerd at heart and that's clearly his big passion 😊

Given his power level, tabletop must be like a window into the realm of what if I wasn't so powerful? What if all I could do was just cast spells or superhuman feats for a change?

We have to watch out, though, because actor-led and acting-based story games are not the real D&D. D&D was first invented by wargamers who asked the tough questions about whether a character gets hit or not. What determines that? Numbers and probability entered into that, to create a rules set which tried to introduce some kind of fidelity or realism to the issue. But that takes numbers, thinking, and math, things the Drama Majors in college shrank from severely...

I don't know if you intended this but this feels pretty gate-keepery. Ignoring the unpleasant assumption that Drama majors shrink from "thinking", even if we accept that the first D&D players had a hard focus on numbers over story, I wouldn't say this makes it more "real" D&D. I wouldn't say the latest board game designs aren't "real" board games just because design and play philosophy has moved on, or that theatre today isn't "real" theatre just because it looks nothing like what was performed in Ancient Greece. What exactly are we watching out for?

I think actual play shows have exposed that the average player doesn't want any of what you just said and would actually just like to goof around with their friends, which is much closer to what an actual game is in my experience.

Thanks? You've decided that you've got a really tiny space in which to feel you matter in this world, don't you? Relax, it's just life.
