He has had multiple hair transplants over many years. The 2014 interview his hair was cut short because he probably had an additional transplant shortly before it. It looks thinner because of the ‘shock loss’ phenomenon where hair surrounding the new follicles temporarily sheds. His hair returns looking better than ever at end of 2014 because all his transplanted hair has matured and grown out , and the hair that shedded has returned.
@paulira7407

That maybe true but the reason he had his hair short in 2014 was because Christopher Nolan asked him he needed to have his hair short to play a NASA astronaut in “Interstellar.” He probably then decided to do an additional transplant since he was going to have short hair for the film.

city yeah, also I used to do a bunch of stuff to keep my hair-- propecia, dutasteride, derma rolling, androgen blocking liquids. One thing that I noticed was his skin texture and fullness was improving cyclically. It coincides with heavy finasteride/dutasteride + minoxidil use. When I was on propecia, especially dutasteride, my skin was fuller, more vibrant and had more youth to it. I looked less manly and more boyish. That same transformation happened with Matt. His skin seemed to take a dramatic shift in quality and texture-- like the complete opposite of how roids age the skin. Also when you're on propecia/dutasteride, it accelerates the shedding cycles, meaning your hair is in constant fluctuations of thinning and thickening, but certain people can be naturally good responders and grow back their hair with minimal side effects. Unfortunately for me, the side effects were too much so I had to quit, and sadly have lost a lot of my hair. I'd rather have full balls and the ability to get and maintain an erection than have a full, thick head of hair.

Hey Derek, I would love to see a video on you explaining how you managed to restore your hair back to baseline. You've made quite a few videos on your hair loss prevention protocol, but I don't think I've ever seen you do a video on how you managed to restore what you originally lost to get back to baseline. Your thumbnails show it was a pretty dramatic loss, so how did you manage to restore it, before then using your current prevention protocol? As I was under the impression things such as finasteride, micro-needling, RU58841 was for decreasing DHT / increasing blood flow, preventing further loss, not restoring hair follicles that had already died / receded.

So all the methods you're using in your current prevention protocol such as finasteride, micro-needling, RU, ketoconazole shampoo were all used to help restore your hair to how it is now, even the hairs that had already shrunk / receded? It's just the title of the videos for 'prevention' protocol implies that they're used to prevent further hair loss by blocking DHT, not to gain back what has already been lost. The playlist has 193 video, I've seen most, but I wasn't sure if there was one or two specific ones on re-gaining lost ground, rather than preventing further loss. Cheers

Too, I developed huge corners in my temples when I was 17 and I waited till I was 23 to start taking medication, because I just wasnt so good in figuring out how to combat it and when I finally came upon finasteride and minoxidil I was already norwood 3.5 well on my way to norwood 4....but dude, my hair got sooo much better in the last two years that I have been taking medication. I'm somewhere between norwood 2 and 3, my hair is thick as fuck, I can't even comb it properly lol and it's dark so it gives me more coverage visually...If I wasn't such a slow idiot and started taking meds at 20-21 I wouldnt even need to think about hair transplant. However, I know that without meds I would lose everything in the matter of a couple of years so I only plan on getting my temples filled in a little bit and increasing density where I still have hair...that's it. Fuck it. Norwood 2 is still presentable when you reach your thirties and it will never look bad as you get older. And if you have a good density you can still style it well. Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Harry Styles or Gavin Newsom....they are all Norwood 2 and they manage to look good because they don't hide their hairlines and they have good density in the forlock without having high hairlines. That's what I'm going for so I guess 2000 grafts would be more than enough and the rest will be just for maintenance for the future.

It’s like being embarrassed about your race. You literally have zero control over it. Funny story, no one on my mom or dads side ever went bald. I’m 44 and have a full head of hair, however when I got covid (delta strain) and dam ne’er died from it, I was loosing so much hair I thought I would end up bald. I would shower and there would be a small animal worth of hair in the drain. My pillow would be full in the morning …. Started to freak out and was like ok well I look pretty tough with a shaved head so should be ok. My hair was thin for about a year but has fully recovered. No receding at all and nice and thick again. It’s prob never going to be as thick as it was because it was crazy thick before but it’s still much better now then it was after covid. So maybe hair can come back on it’s own as it did for me.

Hi all, Looking for some advice here and tbh MPMD comments is probably the best place to ask. I'm a norwood 1.5 to 2 ish with diffuse thinning. I have just started finasteride 1mg. I've read that the timeline to see some improvement is typically between 3-6 months, but can be up to a year. Assuming after 1 month I don't see any side effects, is there any reason I should NOT start minoxidil and micro needling treatments after the first month of finasteride? My thought process is ensure that I don't have any heavy side effects from finasteride and then start on minoxidil and micro needling asap. Is there any point in delaying other treatments. I feel that I may aswell begin the other treatments to try and return some of the receded areas asap. Thanks for your opinions/feedback in advance.

Below is my journey from norwood 2.5 to 1.5. I'm hoping to achieve at least a norwood 1 by continuing, and I'm putting this here in hopes that it helps some other men out there suffering from hair loss: Three years ago I was about a norwood 2.5 with diffuse thinning throughout the top and a slowly growing quarter-sized bald spot at the crown. My profile picture is representative of this state. I started finasteride 1 mg per day after being recommended it at a hair transplant consultation in Beverly Hills. They wanted about 10-12 G's for basically the full sha-bang FUE hair transplant, 2,000 follicles transplanted from the back of my head to the top and front. I wanted to do it, but couldn't afford it at the time, so I began the finasteride and about six months later I had some minor to moderate reduction in thinning, but no noticable change in my hair line. I wanted to maximize what I could achieve with means cheaper and less invasive than surgery, so I began searching relentlessly on KZitem for potential solutions. It took a few months, but eventually I stumbled on Derek's videos on the subject, and after watching several of his older videos on various chemicals and processes I decided to try adding minoxidil for a duo therapy approach. Around this time I also reduced my finasteride dosage to 1 mg every other day. I wasn't experiencing any noticeable side effects, but some hair transplant surgeons here on YT recommended using it only every other day, because in their experience it's just as efficacious and reduces the chances of side effects. Within two months of introducing minoxidil, about 0.5mL twice a day, I started to notice a more dramatic increase in hair density on the top of my head, which made me really excited about what I could achieve if I added more therapies to my regimen. Having watched just about all of Derek's videos about men's hair at this point, and seen him recommend the Derminator 2 medical grade dermaneedling device many times, I decided to order it for about $200. It took about a month to arrive, and unlike some reviews say it does sting and hurt a bit to use at 1.5mm penetration (at least for me), but it is bareable and is the first and only thing I've added to my regimen that visibly adds back hair to the front of my hairline which I had lost several years ago at this point. The way I notice new hairs pop up is hairs further forward than my core hairline, and shorter than where my hair is currently cut to, suggesting that are brand new. At first I was needling weekly because that's what some of the hyper responders Derek has covered seem to do. I liked the results, but found it hard to find the time to do it so frequently because the next day the dots of blood at the front of the hairline are still visible. So about two months into using the device I reduced it to roughly once a month. Finally, I decided to try adding RU-58441 for a quad therapy approach because it became available from the same online store I had been buying my high quality, fast drying minoxidil from. Now I'm about a norwood 1.5, and the density on top is very similar to how I remember it being in my early- to mid-20's even though I'm 39 now and will be 40 later this year. The only thing that I'm not absolutely sure has helped me a lot is the RU, since I've introduced this more recently. I ordered about a 6-month supply that I'm about halfway through. My plan is to finish the RU I have, and then make an assessment to buy more or to go back to the triad therapy and perhaps go back to dermaneedling every week or two. It's also worth noting that around the time I started the RU I also decreased the minoxidil from 1mL/day split in two doses to one dose of around 0.75mL. This was to save money on product by making it last longer, and also just to make the regimen easier to maintain. I also do about 0.75mL of the RU, sometimes at the same time of day, other times one in the morning and the other at night. If you try both RU and dermaneedling, I recommend waiting a bare minimum of 2 days off RU before and after each dermaneedle session, if not 3 or 4 days to be on the safe side. This stuff is a harsh anti-androgen that you definitely don't want going systemic. For your convenience, I will drop my current full quad therapy in a reply to this comment. Good luck out there guys! You can do this!

One last thing, I forgot to mention in my story that I still have the mostly thinned out bald spot at the crown, but it has reduced from a quarter size to about a nickel size, and is less thinned out and only visible in harsh overhead lighting now. I'm hoping to make it completely disappear, even in bad lighting, as I proceed to a strong Norwood 1.

@@momentumstocks3493 na, Ive spent $200 on the dermaneedler, about $300 on the minoxidil and RU so far, and $40 on the finasteride.
