Gretsch, I think you need to make more of these kinds of play through videos. I love how you have recently been putting out videos where the artist talks about the kit or snare and plays it a bunch, but if you had more videos with playthroughs in the context of a song, that would be awesome. I bought my Catalina Maple in November 2015 after searching the internet for videos like this, and it was because of this video and the demos that Sweetwater and Guitar Center put out which made me decide to go with a Catalina Maple 7 piece in Walnut Glaze.

Came for the Catalina Maples, stayed for the fro (!!) ... and that jazzy-rock, hip beat! Nice playing and arrangement Matty and thank you for spending fair time on each tom so we can hear that sweet "great Gretsch sound" (with a great overhead shot so we could clearly see which one was sounding off, kudos to the Director)! And thank you Gretsch for giving us such a fantastic, all-around, mid-entry level option; a stunning looking & amazing sounding kit at a very good price. Thought I had my mind made up for my very first kit with a set of Pearl Exports (after narrowing it down from looking at SO MANY different brands & models, my head still spinning), but I found my thoughts kept continually returning back to these so I've decided to listen to that little inner voice and figure the roughly extra $500 or so would be well spent on the "Cat Mapes" (as everyone and their mother seems to have a set of Pearls anymore and I am not one to simply follow with the masses). Still like the Exports for the money and the difference in price (after doing an add-on to their 5-piece for the 8" tom and 14" floor tom to make it an equivalent 7-piece) primarily comes down to Pearl including their pretty decent 830 hardware with 930 bass pedal verses Gretsch offering it only as a shell pack but to me, the Gretsch brand and a set made of all maple shells (over the Export's poplar & mahogany) is clearly a step up and as an absolute complete beginner, I know my playing is going to SUCK but with these, I feel I am at least making a LOUD statement that I am SHOWING UP for the game! Just hoping now that a local music store has them on the floor in Walnut Glaze alongside a set of the (glossy) Deep Cherry Burst so I can make up my mind, as I am entirely torn between the two from looking so far only online and can only put my mind at ease assuredly for pulling the trigger on one or the other by seeing each color in person. Fingers crossed, as I have 3 Sam Ash AND 3 Guitar Center locations near me so hopefully between the darn 6 of them, I can get to see each in person. The Walnut Glaze I think I am pretty sold on but GAAAT DAMMMN that Deep Cherry Burst looks so freeeeaking luxurious in Guitar Center's 2+ minute Product Spotlight with drum specialist Mariano! kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aWcnHhncWlzl6Q

my exact kit, its a decent sounding kit with just the standard heads, I have a pearl session and a ludwig, only thing I don't like about Grestch is the tom holder, bit of messing round getting height and angle right, toms are on a free floating set-up, rest of the hardware was gibraltar, kinda light, easy to lug around though.
@DeanWuksta

marcelodtise a lot will criticize pearl, but their tom holders are great, simple design but very reliable and effective. I used the kit the other night as a 4 piece, hung the 12" off a stand, used the 14" floor tom, mixer guy said it was a loud kit, and i don't really hit that hard, still got original skins, but I use an Evetts snare.

Snare drum just a little higher and tighter, toms also a quarter key higher with the same responsive tuning, and it would be really perfect. As maple kits generally tend to a warm mushy sound, it would perfectly balance the character of the wood and the shells. Not too high of course. It would destroy the full body of the maple sound. Only a slight bit tighter and more precise.

for what it's worth the value in the Gretsch Catalina is far superior to the competitor that you speak of. I'm 42 years old and I've been playing the skins just over three decades. just one man's opinion. I sincerely urge you to play both and if you can on the same day same room so you get a true comparison between the two.

@gaboogablah
4 жыл бұрын
@@Mari000 I've had a lot of drums and drum sets in the past over 45 years. Mahogany, maple, poplar, walnut, stainless steel, and aluminum. Honestly, the best sounding bass I've ever had was a 18 x16 poplar bass, and it didn't need anything inside the drum to muffle, dampen, or deepen the bass sound. The best snare I've had is a tama star walnut 14x6.5 and with or without any muffling it sounds great. The toms, I'd say pearl has the right idea with the reference line, i used to mix the types of wood for my toms and the only size that maple sounds right is the 13 inch rack tom. Other drummers have agreed with me on that also. I'm using a 20x18 star walnut bass. I special ordered the shells for the diameter and depths i wanted. All 8 shells are hand made and hand finished inside and out. The star is really a work of art. I wanted a star classic but when I was ordering my drums, was the first year tama was producing the star classic in China, and I don't want my shells made in China. Mine are made in Japan, but Taiwan, Germany, and the US are the only countries I want my shells from. It used to be almost all hardware was made in Taiwan, and that's fine, but now it's made in China, so that's out of our control. Hopefully since China released the pandemic on the world, the drum manufacturers will bring their products back to their home counties and that will bring their quality back up also. Rather than buy a Chinese set just because the price is lower, look for a used set from before the 90s, they should be cheap and better quality because they weren't made in China. Yamaha was making their drums in Indonesia before they moved profoundly to China and the hardware was made at the same factory as the motorcycles were. But I've never had a yamaha drum set, so I can't tell you much about them. I started playing when I was young with zildjian cymbals, but they kept cracking around the bell, so I switched to Paiste 2002 and never had a problem. I've got cymbals and some promark sticks I've been playing for 35+ years. I got a Roland TD-6KV i think in 2003, i was surprised it was made in China, but Roland must have great quality control, because my set is still working perfectly, with all original electronics, pads, etc. I hope this helps.
