Maureen McKinney, Belfast Titanic Society.
On Monday 13th March 2023 SASH had the pleasure of hosting Maureen McKinney from the Belfast Titanic Society who spoke around “Tracing Relatives from the Belfast Shipyards"
Maureen did not just speak about individuals she has researched though, including her own family, she went much further by showing us not only the relevant Sources of Interest, places to search, but also how we could go about researching our own family members, or anyone else’s, that may have worked within the Belfast Ship Yards, both H & W, & Workman, Clark & Company.
As a sixteen year old in early 1987 I myself set off for my first day of work within H & W Ship Yard, & to this day I remember it not only as being a great place to work, but a great place to learn a trade & meet people who you’d go on to have lifelong friendships with.
There was always a buzz about the Yard, & plenty of stories from the Aul Hands too, with each holding fond memories of a certain ship they’d worked on in the past, ships like the SS Canberra.
Now I don’t suppose you’d ever really be able to put a finger or figure on exactly how many people, like ants, worked at Ship Building over the centuries here, but to research, compile & put on display as much of its social history as possible is something that SASH not only understands, but fully supports.
It’s so important that both the history of the Ship Yards & their Workers is told, because it’s a history that the entire country should be proud of. It’s a history of people doing hard, & dirty jobs in many cases, without thanks, or even without Health & Safety for most of it, & doing so simply to earn enough money to put food on the table, whilst delivering Ships that are still remembered around the world to this very day.
On behalf of SASH I would like to thank Maureen not only for her talk & presentation, which or group enjoyed greatly, but also for the part she plays in securing our future generations ability to see, read & learn about this strand of our History, our Proud Ship Building History.
Thank You Maureen.
