One of the unstated themes of this movie is the denial of Maverick's competence. He is clearly one of the best at what he does. And yet multiple two- and three-star admirals, throughout the movie, call him "obsolete". An "old relic". Even while demanding pilots who will do exactly what he does, they deny that he can do it at all (never mind that he can do it better than they can). And throughout most of the movie, he swallows it. It is not until he has no choice -- when he is, in fact, grounded and ordered not to fly -- that he lives up to his call sign and DEMONSTRATES that he is the one they're looking for... and that they were idiots to ignore it all this time. I think it's one reason the movie is so popular. Many of us have felt this -- that we were useful, but that we were stuck doing a job that didn't make use of our talents -- and chafed at this. Many of us have longed to prove that yes, we do have worth... and that the ones telling us to stand down were wrong. Many of us have longed to hear, as Maverick hears just before the climax of the movie: "You're where you belong. Make us proud."
@annalisavajda252

Cyclone was caught in between two positions. One is that he adheres to the US Navy in terms of having set standards and pilots doing their job properly which Maverick did not with the test pilot program. Admiral Kazansky on the other hand is the superior of Cyclone and Cyclone is doing his boss a favor by accepting Maverick in a final role with the Navy when he should have been released. Hence Cyclone had put the point very clear across to Maverick that he was willing to obey the orders of Iceman who is now debilitated from terminal illness but yet spell out the seriousness of Maverick's situation that he is on his last legs of his career if he doesn't understand that he is now in a privileged position to continue flying.

USAF 2W1 here who worked on F-22s and for a bit on F-35s (but primarily F-16s and F-22s). The argument isn't that F-35s can't fly in GPS null zones. They absolutely can, but the GPS guided weapons cannot. This is why they're utilizing laser guided. Now, from the video, it appears they're using GBU-10s which are a 2000 pound variety. Laser guided too which is typically for moving targets whereas GPS is for stationary but Laser can hit stationary too. Here's the kicker. The F-35 can hold 2x GBU-10s on the external pylons. You just have to install the pylon, update the CCG and configure the SMS page. The only downside is it increases the radar signature, but it's still less than an F-18 which is a school bus on most sequence systems. The F-35 could absolutely be used but it wasn't because they needed an underdog. Also, there's still little known publicly about the full function and capabilities of the F-35. In the movie, it would have to be reduced considerably and would also require MUCH more oversight. Add to that, getting F-18s for trainers for a movie and flights to include inside the cockpit is much easier with an old F-18 than an F-35. The main reason though and this was told to me by a friend who worked as liaison for this movie back in 2017. There is no 2 seater F-35. All the camera work in flight is with the actors in the back seat with the actual navy pilot flying. F-18s have 1 or 2 seats. E or F classification. Like the F-16 with C vs D. They used the F-18F's for this movie with inside cockpit shots and the E model for actual exterior shots so we only see the 1 seat canopy.

@@janus3555 Aaahh ... I love when, all of a sudden, someone with an actual qualification shows up and just flattens out all speculation. Good job, sir. And thank you for your service! I heard the hosts & guests of Fighter Pilot Podcast, as well as on the F-14 Tomcast, discuss the issue of airframe choice for the movie and thought it was fascinating - while also being quite simple ("we just don't have any other two-seaters available!") 🙂

@@Privatepain1234 Air Force here. Without getting too technical, GPS jamming is enough to throw off any radar guided missiles. A blanket of it at this magnitude in the movie at that type of terrain is even more challenging. Laser guiding is the only way. When I first saw this movie, I thought to my self that the defense grid of the target is overkill. But then again, it's not impossible to have such defense.

A two star admiral behaving like a schoolyard bully to what is essentially the most highly decorated naval aviator that the navy has at the time of this film. My great grandfather served in the United States Navy through both world wars. And if you were alive to see this, he probably would be very very angry at the way. Cyclone is conducting himself. It doesn’t matter if they’re in private. The simple fact of the matter is is that he is supposed to be one of the more higher ranking individuals in the Navy. And yet he is being, disrespectful to Maverick and it shows that for some random reason, he seems to have some kind of vendetta against him. If my grade grandfather saw anyone behaving like that in the US Navy, he would’ve had them either immediately dishonorably discharged or at the very least demoted and reassigned for conduct unbecoming of an officer.
