The difference in confidence and flow between tow-in and paddle-in is so glaringly evident in this video. Don't get me wrong as a surfer I have total and complete respect for those chargers clawing into monster waves with just their own two hands. But to be honest it is undeniable that under most circumstances tow-in surfing yields more aesthetically beautiful big wave rides.
@RedBullSurfing
3 жыл бұрын
All good points @Charles Martin... tow and paddle are definitely very different approaches. I guess it depends on where you what aspect of the wave riding you want to focus on. The lines that guys like Kai are drawing on a tow board are mind boggling, but there is something terrifyingly beautiful about a huge paddle-in drop like Ian's, even though he didn't make it. When you're in the channel and someone paddles into a monster like that, you can feel the collective energy of the entire crowd watch just focus in on that drop. It's wild, inspiring stuff.
@charlesmartin1121
3 жыл бұрын
@@RedBullSurfing I appreciate both types of big wave surfing. I do think most of the general public don't fully understand just how challenging paddling into massive waves like this really are or the limitations of balancing on a over large surfboard with just some wax on the deck for traction. As such they might wrongly judge the paddle-in surfers to have less skill at riding these waves versus the tow-in surfers, if they can even tell the difference in the first place.
@Aromatic-ring
3 жыл бұрын
Paddling into big waves is much more difficult and respectable than getting towed in. The fear and danger of getting really worked is in the take off. Plus it’s more pure, not to diss either method. It’s just the truth.
@charlesmartin1121
3 жыл бұрын
@@Aromatic-ring I agree with what you said completely--paddling into giant waves is more difficult, the risks are higher and it is more pure. However if you set aside those factors, and are only concerned with the sheer beauty of the performance, I have never seen the best paddle-in rides equal the best tow-in rides. But thats just my opinion.
@Aromatic-ring
3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesmartin1121 Well the reasoning behind that is because tow ins are controlled positioning, and much easier to get into it. Paddling into a wave is controlled by the surfer themselves.
