The photography that we do from drones seldom requires us to fly huge distances away , so that massive range is comforting but not generally used , what is more important is the quality of the camera and the footage it can deliver. . Cheers mate , enjoyed this vid .

@@coulsdonplasterer4380 hi yes that is basically correct, unless it is a built up area, the definition of a built up area is not clearly defined. I have flown over my street and surrounding streets at 300 feet so I am more than 50m above them, but I would not fly over the town centre. I hope that helps.

Great video! That´s exactely the information I was looking for: realistic max. flight time and max. total distance possible. Most test videos give you max. range but max. distance is much more valuable to know, e.g. for a round trip where you are never terribly far away from your homepoint!

Again another concise and clear video. I confess I do not understand why people are obsessed with going for miles with these drones. I’m generally happy with VLOS here in the U.K. and I think I would be petrified sending it a few miles away... anyway thanks again ..quality

If you think about it.....20-24 minutes of actual flight is awesome. In fact, with the combo you just come back, plop a new one in and back at it. Since the FAA rules require it to be kept within sight anyway that is more than enough time to get footage. Most certainly will be adding the Mavic Air 2 to my line up.

I think they could've stretched a bit more out, by using lighter internal plastics and finding a way to passive cool the internals with vents or something (there is a fan inside this drone). However then you're sacrificing things like water resistance, durability, performance of the camera and processing units, etc. I really believe that the mavic Air 2 is the ideal example of a well-balanced drone for an outstanding price. It wasn't that long ago you'd be lucky to get 10 minutes out of an aircraft without spending outrageous amounts of money.

I'm sure I'm not the only one saying that flight time differs upon weather conditions (wind in particular), speed and a few other variables. For example, one can pretty much stand still, with the cam shooting a long hyperlapse/timelapse and the flight time will be much shorter than the propagated "34 minutes". One thing to add is about batteries.. Capacity usually improves (quite) a bit over time. My first flight was about 19 minutes. After that each one was a bit longer. Now, about a month later, I get about half hour every time if flying moderately. Also, charging batteries with the hub (included in FMC) should be after the batteries have been charged by the "direct" charger at least once (I do it three times each). Has to do with the batteries being "intelligent", their "activation" etc. And yeah, ANOTHER THING to keep in mind is storing the batteries.. They are best taken care of if, after each flight, they are not kept inside the drone, any sort of bag or case and are put in a place that is dark, not humid and rather cooler than hotter (extremes are excluded - hopefully self-explanatory). What I also do is stand them up so that charging contacts look upwards. I would go as far to also say their lifetime should be noticeably longer. I know a thing or two about electronics in general but also have a few friends making their living with repairing and modding drones and the likes. If my comment helps anyone, that's great, if on the other hand anyone has anything to add, good or bad, you are more than welcome to do so. To live is to learn 😊
@IaninLondon

All true points. This video was a bit of fun; obviously flying full throttle was going to drain the battery fast; recording video also drains the battery faster too....In practice I'm getting around 26-28 mins per flight before critical battery...

I have worked on extending the flight distance overall (not just radio range) and learned many ways to fly farther. Have made it over 11 miles and many flights in the 10+ mile range. Biggest limiter is wind. Altitude surprisingly not as big a limiter as expected. Are at least 20 points to follow to get over 11 miles on the MA2.

First time out with my Air 2 today ( forced upgrade after my Air took a dip in Lancaster canal ) - by the third battery I felt confident in the drone to try a distance flight ( along a beach so in my line of sight at all times to watch for air traffic ) and reached 4.6km with a headwind before getting low battery warning and turning around. Signal was still strong, and landed with 30% power remaining 👍 A huge improvement over the original Air

What a calm machine compared to the P3P I also have. Quiet, responsive without the .mmmm, violence perhaps, of the P3P. You have to be aware that a CURVED path means ACCELERATION (Newton’s laws) and acceleration does not come for free, you need extra power to put in for that, which means it will drain your battery faster. If you want to see if you can really get the 34min flight time with one charge I’m afraid you’d have to fly in a straight line. That being said, i’m sure you will probably not get quite 34min.. since this may be the time under ideal conditions (e.g. the wind impacts the flight time). I’m curious to know how DJI came up with their numbers.
@IaninLondon

Yes; this was a full throttle max speed test; flying slowly is the way to get most battery life; and of course straight line non stop would only be possible when driving bhind it on a very long straight road.... With no wind. :) Degree in Physics here;probably explains a lot about my briain :)

Are you certain that a windy day will not reduce the flight time, if you're flat out into the wind in P mode, it'll try and maintain the speed asked of it, with consequently greater battery drain, and I would imagine that is not recouped during the downwind run? This is strictly guesswork on my part, but it seems viscerally wrong. Any chance of doing the test the next time the wind drops (and maybe also when the wind is high as well as a comparison?) I send my old faithful P3P out on a Litchi mission loop (24 kph), and it comes home with lower battery on a windy day..

It was actually a very light breeze on this day and it sat on its top P mode speed much of the time. So I do think what it loses flying into the wind is made up flying with the wind.... 👍🏻👍🏻

Good test. You are a street legal flyer with a reputation to protect so I am surprised people are asking you to break UK drone laws. Keep up the good work 👍

Hi Ian. How about a hover in place duration test? On a nice calm day! Stay safe. BobUK.

I always find them a bit boring 😀😀😀. And you're supposed to get more flight time with flying than hovering 👍🏻👍🏻

Ian when I fly my mavic air 2 do I recharge my batteries after each fly or do I wait till next fly day to recharge. Last time I went flying with my drone I recharged my batteries but when I checked them today their at 50%. Would greatful if you can explain how batteries work. Thx
@IaninLondon

the batteries have a smart discharge function that brings them down to 50% after a few days as this prolongs the battery life. You're best off recharging after a flight as that stops the batteries staying discharged after a flight and just remember to charge them again before your next flight if you haven't flown for a few weeks.👍🏻
