Upon his arrival in Dhaka, Bangladesh, His Highness The Aga Khan was received by the Honourable Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, in a full ceremonial welcome. During his stay in Dhaka, The Aga Khan also met with the Honourable President of Bangladesh, Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed, as well as a number of other Government ministers. A state dinner was hosted by the Chief Adviser in honour of The Aga Khan , and The Aga Khan reciprocated by hosting an Imamat banquet in honour of the Chief Adviser. In a colourful ceremony attended by the Honourable Adviser for Education, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, The Aga Khan laid the Foundation Stone for the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka, where he spoke about the centrality of education as an element in the Islamic tradition and the importance of affirming the integrity of local and national cultures. Later in the visit, The Aga Khan and the Honourable Adviser for Foreign Affairs, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury laid the Foundation Stone for the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre Dhaka. The Aga Khan shared his hopes and dreams which had inspired the building. “We see this as a place of peace and tranquillity, filled with a spirit of humility and prayer. It will not be place for conceit or self-satisfaction, but rather a place for search and enlightenment,” he said, expressing that the building will be a place where men and women could "help strengthen those common bonds which reflect our common challenges and which will shape our common destiny.”
