At the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Max Verstappen managed to equal Ayrton Senna's record of eight consecutive pole positions, despite a difficult weekend for Red Bull. Verstappen stressed that after the results of free practice, he did not expect to get pole, but the adjustments made to the RB20 before qualifying made the difference.
"It's been a very difficult weekend so far and I'm very happy with the pole here because I didn't expect it. But before qualifying we made some changes that made me feel better and I was able to push harder," Verstappen commented.
The world champion also expressed his admiration for the Imola circuit, highlighting the corners and the adrenaline rush of racing there. "Pushing to the limit here, close to the gravel, really gets your heart racing and the adrenaline is really high," he added.
Verstappen was also excited to match Senna's record, especially on the 30th anniversary of the legendary driver's death. "It's a great start to the year, but it's also very special to equal Senna's record on this very circuit, 30 years after his death. I'm very happy to have taken pole here. In a way it's a nice way to remember him. Ayrton was an amazing driver, especially in qualifying. A great day for me and for the team. I'm very happy," he concluded.
