I do the same thing on my sim pedals. Pretty sure this is just like when you jiggle the stick shift in a car to make sure it’s neutral. It’s a habit for some but not all. It’s basically the foot version of adjusting your hand position of the steering wheel

This is it and even on a +100hp consumer car you can do this to smooth out the very first tenths of a second of the acceleration. It replaces reflex with experience.

If sims are just a game, then why now you're required to clock hundreds of ours in the sim before you can get a flying license. Sims have been able to model reality fairly accurately right now, only old-fashioned stubborn people would pretend they are good for nothing. It also makes 100% sure he’s fully planted his foot at the end of the pedal travel and there’s no wiggle room left at end of the throttle cable. Probably mattered more in lower racing categories. Also gives a bit of a flex to avoid leg cramps setting in during a long race.

Rene Rast tends to plant his left foot on top of his right foot when accelerating to make sure he's full throttle. Won three DTM titles in four years, so there's something to it, I guess.

I do the same thing. But it's actually to bring the feet down to the floor. Because from the extreme rear set position, the feet gradually floats off into the air while we press the pedal. We can fine control the throttle only if there is support on our heels. Or else the feet can slide on the pedal due to the small undulations on the track. Something similar happens in a motorcycle as well. The motorcycles with end support helps us to lock into the same throttle position even if the motorcycle moves over a pothole.

You can see pianists do this too!! There are 3 pedals on a piano, the sustainer (or damper) is the most used one and on the right hand side of all 3, and your foot can slide quite a bit

Back in my karting days we pushed our right heel to the right like that to put a little extra pressure on the throttle cable, just in case the the carb wasn’t 100% open. Maybe it’s just an old habit that he never stopped. Either way he’s an amazing driver and I’m looking forward to the rest of his career.

I thought it was to make sure you have a better grip on the throttle. So when you drive, you are always 100% confident you apply maximum strength/force I do this when I kart too, and in my head I think "Let's go" and floor it

To me, my foot tends to get quite stiff and/or cramp up if I'm constantly having to be smooth on the throttle. Often times on a straight when flat out I will roll my ankle and press down extra hard on the pedal just to flex and relax my foot a bit.

I do it as a mountain biker, and on skateboards & longboards, as well as when I drive: Forces [ex.: bumps] displace the pedal:foot alignment; Re-adjusting for optimal positioning is normal... not weird.

I am no pro by a long shot, but I do this all the times. I drive stick and picked this habit up as a young driver because of rain puddles affecting the pedals and I would constantly be worried my foot might slip in an emergency so I always make sure I have best position. Now I have my kids in the car so I still do it.

there is another reason. when precisely pressing throttle u can forget how much u r in on throttle. so u touch end or surrounding to find a reference for ur foot to remember how much throttle is left.

I do it too. I found that I have a tendency to end up with the ball of my foot in the centre of the pedal, putting the edge in the centre of your foot and causing discomfort due to the circulation being cut off in the sole of your foot.
