If you do them with a slight lean forward you get the medial delt to do more work on the lateral raise. If you want full isolation (and get alot people bitching about shoulder impingement) you do the same thing but you have your thumbs down pinky up and flair your elbows to the front. When you go up in this motion you notice its impossible to raise your arms above your head but you will notice your medial head getting hit much harder. For the shoulder impingement experts you do this exercise with light weight like that man says in this video and you will have zero shoulder impingement issues. Alternatively you can do the same motion doing wide grip upright rows focusing on the same form i explained; if you do them regular you get your traps involved on the movement.

Wow thought I was the only person that did them this way. Another rule to protect your shoulder especially if you have a certain downward slope on your acromion process (which you won’t know unless you have an X-ray) is to angle your thumb higher than your pinky to avoid internal rotation

Firstly i really appreciate this variation of Lateral Raise, eventho i don't rock or bend whe doing it cuz i have not really pushed myself to the very heavy weight cuz i worried about backpain or injury but i love that u showed a safe way where i can successfully amd gradually overload. My sole focus is on shoulder muscle during this workout. Also if one has a strong grip over the dumbbell, there won't be much muscle tension. Plus lift only that dumbbell which your shoulders can manage to lift up with.

A lot of guys use the swinging momentum as they come back up. At the bottom you’ll pause and then slowly raise the weight until you reach full contraction.👍🏼

For me, it really helped to do some cable lateral raises every now and then. I feel a lot more mind-muscle connection with the cable raises for some reason, which made me understand dumbbell raises better as well.

It’s much better to just do them on a cable machine, it helps isolate the shoulder even more because no matter how much you try, when you use dumbbells it uses your traps as well

This guy is 100% I can barbell shrug around 100lbs now but when it comes to doing shoulder dumbbell work outs I find around 3lb, 5lb, max 20lb is best for my sets. My shoulders are small btw but the math is in the shrug to side raise ratio. Lighter weight than you think is key

I do lateral raises with 28kg dumbells. I promise you you won't do them controlled 😊 It's just too much weight. And yes, I keep my arms relatively straight, I don't do chicken raises.

I see your point but medial delts are a smaller muscle supported by one of the biggest muscles in the upper body (trap, lay complex), if you’re at the the end of sets, it’s okay to cheat a bit to minimize activation of those bigger muscles

Man we saw the greatest bodybuilder ever lift exactly the way y’all say don’t lift. So if you get up to a really heavy weight and you gotta swing a lil bit it worked for big Ron. The target muscle will still be activated and if you’ve done working sets up to that weight you will feel the burn in that muscle

I've come to understand that form is not that important. Most people aren't trying to be bodybuilders. As long as you work out the most important muscles, you will build muscle and be fit. The key is consistency on a regimen you like.
