I love finding little hidden gems like this (both the video and the game). There is something truly special about lesser known games from the Golden Age of Gaming like this. Even more modern indies can't quite capture the vibe, it's not nostalgia as it applies to a lot of games even when played for the first time with no prior knowledge but it's difficult to truly describe, I think it has to do with how uniform game development tools have become in recent years so that even well made retro style games just have a certain cleanness or uniformity to them that just didn't exist prior because game engines and other ready made toolkits weren't as widespread, and perhaps the fact that design philosphies were similarly less crystalized and unifrom so you'd see more experimentation instead of most everything fitting neatly into well defined genre tropes.
@KalTheSkeleton

I wholeheartedly agree. While those tools helped companies stop re-inventing the wheel, it also stopped them from making any other interesting shapes. Another factor that I think impacts that flavor is that without such strict hardware limitations, we don't see the creative solutions devs made to work around them. A lot of those things became the cool glitches or speedrunning strategies that keep a game alive in a community for decades. Instead, you get battle-passes.

It was a really unexpected and memorable bit of cinema and storytelling to pull. Makes it a shame so few people got to see it because the game was so hostile. Welcome, it's a very exclusive club, but it also puts you on several No-Fly lists, so, be aware of that.

Maximo seemed like such a cool way to put a new spin on Ghost and Goblins. It's a shame there was only the first and then 2nd game which I hear almost no one talk about in general. Maybe Capcom could revisit Maximo at some point, perhaps give both games a remaster treatment, or just full-blown remake.

I remember when Risk of Rain 2 was announced I felt like the jump from 2d to 3d seemed like an odd choice, and I think I'm in the extreme minority who actually preferred the first one. Maximo is kind of the opposite, I enjoyed it much more in 3d. I have heard Capcom is apparently looking at more remasters, so maybe we'll hear something soon.

Had this game as a kid, sure as hell never bear it. I definitely remember getting stuck at some ice boat level. But I also have vague memories of Hell so guess I got to that point too, but definitely never passed it. But the thing that really keeps this game in my memory, is the fact that my mom actually played it with me. And she is not a gamer WHATSOEVER. Like I can't think of a single other video game she's touched that isn't some mobile game. And yet she suffered through this game with me.

Damn, that's pretty impressive. I would not have made it past the first boss. When I did get to the ice level, I had to go look up what to do about the bomb guys online, it was brutal out there. Sadly, there is that, and imagine how hard the modern reviewers would try burying both Maximo games, if not just throwing a screaming fit? I mean, it would be nice if Capcom showed Maximo the thought they did Arthur, and gave him a title that actually wrapped things up.

I feel like Army of Zin improved on it a lot, but that last boss man, the presentation, the crooked view you have, it's masterful, usually games gets a bit worse as they go due to development time, they typically run out of time and money by the end part, but this one ended on such a bang, and cause the game's a bit brutal not everyone saw it sadly. Too bad the third game got canned, it and Legends 3 still pains me.
@KalTheSkeleton

Absolutely agree with everything you said. As I've dug through more of these old games the intro is always awesome and the end usually feels like someone was working on it as the teacher came around to collect homework. I think I mentioned it in another comment but Maximo in actually really polished for a ps2 game, it runs great and I didn't run in to any weird bugs. It's just meant to be hard, and it is. I read about that and Legends 3. I recently did a Legends video, so at least I'm emotionally ready for the hit when I get to Legends 2.

I rememebr seeing this game get advertised back in the day, but never got around to trying it. I always liked the Ghosts & Gouls series and was curious about a sequel/continuation but I think it came out at a time when I didn't really want to engage with "difficult games". I think it and it's sequel would be great for remasters. Maybe revamp the save system so it has more flexibility (but keep the old one for people who want it) and I'd probably grab them, though I doubt Capcom could considering how they seem to treat IPs like this and Onimusha. That said, I do like an idea the fighting game KZitemr Thorgi suggested in his "build a roster" entry for Darkstalkers. I won't say any more but it's a great idea.

Capcom did apparently mention that they are working on several projects with older IP's, but I still agree with everything you said. I actually forgot Onimusha was Capcom too, those were great. I didn't think about that, but Maximo would have fit right in something like Smash Bros. They're just leaving money on the table all over the place.

If you didn't know, there's a sequel to Maximo called Maximo vs Army of Zin. It's not as hard, does away with the "pay to save" thing as well as the Ability Slots, but still gets tough. You can buy different boxershorts for different abilities/bonuses, as well as some different enchantments for the Shield. This time the Shield doesn't disappear if its Super Meter is empty. You just can't throw it anymore. Bosses are less puzzles and more... well, bosses. Especially the Baron. I played it and enjoyed it. Can recommend looking more into that game!

I think that's a very valid opinion, and I agree with it. I didn't want to run it in to the ground in the video, but that's what I meant when I said the difficulty came in large part from learning what the game wanted you to do. The learning curve was steep, and it doesn't hold your hand, but that can be fun too.
