I’ve said this about many recent movies, 80s nostalgia alone is not enough to make a good film. You have to have an intriguing plot and adequate character development. In this case, there should have been more horror elements as it is at its base, a horror movie. Style over substance is this movie’s flaw.

Fair review, I was wanting to like it more than I did. I felt like the story wasn't as linear as Pearl and X, almost like there was too many side stories and randomness thats didnt add to the characters or storyline. This movie felt like when your favorite band becomes mainstream and makes their first breakout album w all new producers and bigger budgets and feels like a miss, it just doesn't hit like the previous more raw albums

i just got back from the theater and i absolutely agree with your positive and negative thoughts on this film, but i'm still so in love with it. (read this at your own risk because i'll mention a few spoilers since i don't know how to say how i feel about it without bringing up the details). i wouldn't say i'm dumb, but i'm definitely not smart, so whenever there's some sort of big "plot twist" in a story, i'm always shocked because i get so immersed in simply *watching* a movie or *reading* a book that i sort of get tunnel vision. that being said, i almost instantly figured out that the dad was the killer. i know a lot of people see "predictable plot twists" as a bad thing, because for them it might ruin the point or come off as bad story telling, but this one actually worked really well for me. again, maybe it's just me being dumb, but i had more fun putting the pieces together in my mind and being completely right than i would've if i was left wondering what was going on. with everything we get about maxine's past, i knew for a fact that it had to play some prominent role for this film. i couldn't think of any other direction they could've went for it in terms of a killer and a motive because i felt like it wouldn't make sense or it would come off as lackluster since the first two have so many tie-ins. having the killer be some rando with no connection to maxine would feel strange and make the ending on the first film seem unnecessary. part of me felt like maxine knew in the back of her mind that the killer was her father, and thinking about that made me understand her actions of constantly running away/avoiding the detectives and their questions. she was basically running from her father from the moment we met her character in the first film. seeing her finally confront that felt rewarding. when it comes to the third, i can't disagree with it feeling off since it takes a pretty wild turn. even though all three movies have completely different aesthetics, the whole trilogy maintains a pretty consistent tone up until that climax. but somehow, i'm not complaining at all because i had fun with it. the last thing i ever expected was a shootout between two detectives and a group of congregators. i'm shocked that it happened, and i'm even more shocked that i enjoyed it. i loved that there was still something i didn't see coming. i loved the callback to ruth's death when ernest's robe catches on fire as it ties pearl and maxine closer together since their parents (almost) suffered the same fate. i loved that cheesy high pitched '80s sound cue when that one congregator pulled maxine into the pool. i loved the resolution of the film taking place at the hollywood sign!!! they really took advantage of this story's setting, which is one thing i wish a lot of other films did as well. overall, maxxxine is definitely not a "perfect" conclusion to a trilogy, but i'm not at all upset or disappointed with what we got. i remember seeing the trailer for x in the theater before seeing scream v, and i would've never guessed how far the story would go. after being a horror fan for so so long, it's refreshing to finally see something that's classic and similar to previous films in the genre, yet so different and grounded in its own world. i feel like this entire trilogy was an absolute blessing for this generation and i feel so lucky to have been in the theater for each installment.

Now I get why the name of all 3 films put together is Pearl X Maxxxine. Pearl is a joker type film with this alice in wonderland style of Pearl being stuck on the farm and lost her chance to be a star. Then X takes us back to the same farm Pearl is from 50 years later where she is old and bitter taking her revenge of these adult stars in this texas chainsaw massacre vibe also introducing us to Maxine who's whole ambition is to be a star and thats intriguing to Pearl probably because she looks exactly like her from years ago and is challenged by the idol she never got to be. Then we skip years later where Maxxxine takes place showing that She does have the X factor to make it big enough to be in Hollywood where she has an opportunity to start her Hollywood fame with Horror but is also challenged by her past events with Pearl and even further from her childhood that was shown in X.....such a great damn way to tell a story through 3 different time periods

BY FAR the weakest in the trilogy... went and saw it and had high expectations due to how good X & Pearl were... and i just thought the pacing of the movie was all over the place, and the 3rd act was awful. the best part was the musical score and 80s hollywood aesthetic. Most critics seem to agree as it has a 75% rating on Rotten tomatos, while Pearl & X both sit well above 90%

It's got a huge cast of big names Kevin Bacon, Lily Collins, Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito and loved the 80s theme. Very nostalgic for anyone that's lived thru that time. Also great choice of film grain to give it an 80s style movie look. If West shot it digital it would look very different. Overall it falls short of the first two because the story feels mundane. No tension no horror and standard slasher trope. What made first two so good without big name cast and even smaller budget shot in a single location was the story was unpredictable. You have no idea where the story would go so kept you guessing.

Hey sorry for my late input on Maxxxine. I saw this film for the 3rd time. I absolutely love the soundtrack and songs specifically picked throughout the film. I think that the track list, play a role in the film as it blends beautifully into the story. The songs are an extension to the story, an extension of the film, and the lyrics of most, if not all of the songs, are also an extension of Maxxxine. The songs tie into her character development and who she is as a person. I can get a better understanding of her struggles, moving on from the past, the leaps and bounds she is willing to go through, and overall character resolution. The song list is almost in order of appearance. "Gimme All Your Lovin" - ZZ Top "Obsession" - Animotion "St. Elmo's Fire" - John Parr "Prisoner of Your Eyes" - Judas Priest "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" - Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Shell Shock" - New Order "Better Davis Eyes" - Kim Carnes I'm an 80's pop culture nerd and also have been stuck listening to everything 80's for the last 25 years of my life and I'm in my 30's. I just can't express enough how great the song choices are in this film, flipping brilliant. The beauty I get from this film, after multiple viewings, I put all of these songs into a new playlist in iTunes. Obviously being an 80's nut, I already had them, so I moved all the songs that made an appearance in Maxxxine, put them in order as best I could. I popped in my headphones and clicked play. Let's just say, I don't think I need to buy or even watch the movie ever again, I already have Maxxxine just by the song list. I love it when a film does this. "Bette Davis Eyes" - Kim Carnes, explains and describes Maxxxine's character, almost spot on and that is the cherry on top.

I thought the movie was what we expected up until the third act. What the hell was that? Yes, I agree the pacing and third act are big negatives and that’s unfortunate because I had high hopes for this installment. I still enjoyed it very much but now I kind of feel this should have been part 2 and maybe another third movie revolving around Maxine should be the conclusion. Pearl really seems irrelevant as a film now after looking at the trilogy as a whole.
