This conversation between Ralph Rugoff and Jitish Kallat explored the role of 'the biennial' in exhibiting and cultivating critical thought, playfulness, as well as conversations between artists and their work, artworks and their audiences and, ultimately, between publics and counter-publics.

Ralph Rugoff has been Director of the Hayward Gallery since May 2006 and is Artistic Director of La Biennale di Venezia 58th International Art Exhibition, also known as the “Venice Biennale”, which will be held in 2019. Over the past 11 years, London-based Rugoff has curated numerous solo exhibitions, by Jeremy Deller, George Condo, Tracey Emin, Ed Ruscha, and Carsten Höller. He was also the Artistic Director of the XIII Biennale de Lyon in 2015. Ralph also published a collection of essays, ‘Circus Americanus’ (1995), in which he explored the cultural phenomena of the American West.
Jitish Kallat was born in Mumbai in 1974, the city where he continues to live and work. Kallat has exhibited widely at museums and institutions, including Tate Modern, Martin Gropius Bau, Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane), Kunst Museum, and the Serpentine Gallery, amongst many others. Kallat's work has been part of the Havana Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Asia Pacific Triennale, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, amongst others. His solo exhibitions have appeared in museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and the Ian Potter Museum of Art (Melbourne). In 2017, the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi) presented a mid-career survey of his work titled Here After Here 1992-2017, curated by Catherine David. Jitish Kallat was the curator and artistic director of the Kochi Muziris Biennale 2014.
