People dont understand how hard this song is to sing in this key... Shes just amazing
@maiafigueroa5730
8 жыл бұрын
it's actually not hard at all if you are a natural. I have had no experience with private singing lessons (though I have an experience with Theatre) and I audition for Annie and got if right away but if you are not someone with natural talent (this sounds jerky but I don't mean it like that) then yeah I guess it would be and you would have to have A LOT of lessons but my point is I'm just trying to relate and also let you know they're singers (Broadway or not) who have just an amazing voice but I do agree she is AMAZING I love listening to her and she's one of my idols so this isn't hate.

To all of you critical about the accent Lila is using; I'm not trying to offend anyone, however when you (or I) are in the position of producing/directing a show like this we can then decide what accents will or not be used. Meanwhile, why not just appreciate the extraordinary and overwhelming talent on display here without picking nits? This is the first and most important song in the show, as first songs usually are. When properly performed, it sells the rest of the show in that the audience can relax knowing that they are in good vocal hands with this Annie. Additionally, the actor playing Annie has no opportunity to warm up with a chorus number or a less demanding song (just about any song would be less demanding). To expect an 11-year-old girl to come right on and sing this beautiful but rangy and technically challenging song right out of the box is asking a lot. It would be a lot to ask of an adult singer. Dressing room warmup is simply not at all the same as performing as anyone who has done this kind of thing professionally knows all too well. The natural rush of adrenaline when on stage in front of a Broadway audience has caused many an otherwise excellent singer to over-sing and/or overreach the key until they settle down. Lila was already an extraordinary talent at 11 and is by far the best Annie to date for many technical, professional, and artistic reasons IMHO. Even so, she needed and used the first verse of this song to warm up properly and shows precocious maturity (as well as apparently following excellent vocal coaching) by not trying to sell it too soon. Still, as confident she is in the first verse she is clearly holding back from full throttle until you hear how beautifully her voice has opened up at the long high note at 0:48 and on to the end. You can see it in her face during that note that she understands that this is so and confidently performs the rest of the song with ease and brilliance. This is the level of talent required of a performer at this, the highest level, and Lila is one of the best exponents and possessors of such that I have heard.

I don't think anyone is denying how much talent Lila has and how amazing her voice is.. the problem is with the accents they were told/taught to do. They sound dumb and ruin a lot of the dialogue. (Honestly Lila's voice is so amazing that it doesn't ruin her songs for me.. but it ruins a lot of other parts for me)

Unlike many others, I actually think the NY accent is a nice touch because it makes Annie seem more tough/gritty and less cutsey. I'm guessing the haters are bunch of butthurt New Yorkers. It's also worth noting that the story is set in the 1930s so the accent is supposed to be old fashioned rather than a modern day NY accent. The adults are all speaking with transatlantic accents. No one talks that today either and no one's complaining.

Y'all need to shut the hell up about the New York accents, it literally takes place in New York and she is nailing it. I don't understand how it's dragging your attention away from the quality of her singing. The accent doesn't do any harm, why not give her some credit, I mean, she's famous now and her accent in this show sure didn't affect her being noticed by movie producers and agencies.

I’m reading here that some people seem to be overly hung up with the accents that Annie and the others have. Well, that was apparently an artistic choice made by the producers/director (James Lapine no less) to place the story in a particular time and place - New York City circa early 1930’s (have you ever heard the Bowery Boys?). Personally, it doesn’t bother me and in any event, I think they do it very well. Anyway, it seems silly to me to focus on that when we have such an outstandingly glorious vocal performance to listen to. Lilla Crawford is easily the best Annie since Andrea McArdle and IMHO, better. Finding criticism with the accent that she was taught to use is like looking at a great painting and only mentioning the frame.
@Glicksman1

@Jarred Knox Alright, so whats' a better one? You're the only person I have read or heard that considers Lila's performance in Annie to be "cartoonish". With all due respect, you're entirely wrong. Of course, it bears remembering that "Annie" was, after all, a cartoon. You're entitled to state your opinion, as ridiculous as it may be. Our Constitution gives everyone the right to be as myopic as they wish to be and you are certainly taking full advantage of that right.

I grew up with the record of Annie's songs, which played for hours on my father's stereo in the living room. For months, I belted out every tune alongside that sorrowful orphan; unbeknownst to the burdened grimace of my father. Pretty sure he was elated when my Annie phase was over, but her and I spent so many days together as children that, even now, she'll randomly pop into my mind and ill set aside the craziness of the adult things happening around me to spend a couple minutes with the child that taught me there's hope in every circumstance.
